Lady Pirates 3rd place team at district

Alex Naegelin was 2nd and Noelia Medina was 3rd in Discus.

The Lytle Lady Pirate track team placed third at their district track meet last week in Jourdanton. The Lady Pirates scored 125 points, easily outdistancing fourth place Jourdanton who finished with 77 points.
With a limited roster Lytle was oh-so-close to achieving runner-up, as they were only six points behind Karnes City in the final standings. Poth netted 160 to capture the championship.
“With only ten girls on JV and ten girls on varsity I was very proud of the efforts of our teams,” said Lady Pirate Head Coach Gilbert Ruiz. “Our JV girls finished as district champions and the varsity finished 3rd, six points from second place Karnes City and 35 from first place Poth.”
The fact that Lyle even had a chance to not only place second, but had a realistic chance of the overall championship is astounding considering the number of events in which they were not able to field a competitor.
“What makes that 3rd place finish by the varsity special is that they did it without having an athlete competing in 6 of the 17 events, including not running 2 of the 3 relays,” Ruiz continued. “And, if you know track, relays count as double points. So being so close with only six runners and four throwers on varsity without running those relays means that what we did compete in, we did it at a high level. In every event we competed in someone was able to advance and only two of the ten did not finish in the top four of the standings.”
The season marches on for the Lady Pirates as Area is just around the corner.
Ruiz is not ready for this season to end any time soon saying, “This is a very fun group to be around. They are competitive, coachable, and have a high ceiling. These runners are young and motivated and hopefully, they can continue this run they are on and qualify to regionals.”
