Lady Mustangs round out workouts and scrimmages

New Natalia volleyball head coach Tamara Bednorz talks to her team during a recent Lady Mustangs practice.

The butterflies were worked out of a youthful Natalia Volleyball team that took part in just two days of workouts prior to two full days of scrimmage action this past weekend. Twenty-eight Lady Mustangs came out under first year Head Coach Tamara Bednorz and the girls in blue opened their season on press night vs. talented Hondo and D’Hanis on the road in the county seat.
“I would have to say our strength thus far has been our work ethic, our attitude and our willingness to change and accept new ideas,” Coach Bednorz said. “Our girls are being very coachable and that is all you can ask for.”
The Lady Mustangs hit the court last Wednesday morning for two-a-day workouts bright and early and had just two days to prepare for scrimmage #1 in Three Rivers.
“We had a good day in Three Rivers,” Bednorz said. “The girls did a great job of passing and staying up throughout the scrimmage.”
Natalia battled three different teams in Live Oak County before traveling to D’Hanis last Saturday to face the Cowgirls and the Leakey Lady Eagles.
“We had a rough start in D’Hanis vs. the Cowgirls, but it picked up throughout the day and I had the opportunity to see several players on the court in several different positions.”
Coach was asked her thoughts on areas that need improvement and she had the following to say:
“When it comes to areas of growth needed, our passing game needs to be cleaned up a bit,” Bednorz said. “Fundamentals and sport knowledge are also an area we are working on each day.”
Press night, Natalia opened their season on the road in Hondo vs. the Owls and D’Hanis Cowgirls. Results will be available in next week’s Devine News or check for twitter updates.
This coming weekend, Natalia travels back to D’Hanis for the annual Cowgirl Round-up. Natalia opens the tournament Thursday at 10:00 am vs. the Junction Lady Eagles before battling the Leakey Lady Eagles at 11:00 am. Natalia rounds out pool play at 2:00 pm vs. Knippa.
Other teams in the tourney include D’Hanis, Sabinal, Utopia and Center Point, who will battle in pool play on Friday.
Pool play results will dictate when Natalia battles in bracket play on Saturday.
“We are making strides every day to achieve our goal and I am excited,” Bednorz said.
