Devine JV coach Heath Poppe liked what he saw from his young-gun Warhorses last Thursday night against the visiting Gonzales Apaches. The Horses and Apaches each scored one touchdown apiece to call it a draw, but Poppe was not particularly worried with “winning” the scrimmage. Poppe wanted to see his kids play hard, and improve.
“Our intensity was good though and if we messed up we went 100 mph,” Poppe said regarding his JV squad. “I thought we did a decent job offensively but we still have to work out some kinks and work on some timing issues that we have to get corrected before our first ballgame.”
Poppe had additional praise for a few of his running backs and offensive linemen as well.
“I thought Gus Puente and Brandon Martinez ran the ball tough inside and Jonathan Weinkam and Blain Davis had some good runs on the perimeter and blocked well,” Poppe said of the offensive backs. “The offensive lineman had some good blocks at times but still need to work on driving their feet. Even though I liked what I saw overall, naturally we still had some mistakes on blocking assignments from the backs and offensive lineman, but I know they will learn from it and improve quickly.”
