Gene Harlen Morris

A humble and faithful man of God, Gene Harlen Morris, 63 of Castroville, Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 5, 2022.

Gene was born in Hondo, Texas on August 18, 1959 to Cynthia (Smith) Hanna and Berle Gene Morris. Gene and his siblings had a fun and exciting childhood living in various countries throughout the world including Ethiopia and Greece. He met the love of his life, Laurie Ann Wren, in 1981. They were engaged after only six weeks and married for 40 years. Gene and Laurie had four children and seven grandchildren who they loved dearly.
God gifted Gene with a beautiful singing voice which he used to lead worship services and church choirs. His kids could always count on him to coach their sports teams, and his friends could always count on him to keep them entertained on the golf course. No family gathering was complete without karaoke with his mom, sisters, aunts, and cousins.
Gene was a salesman at Brown Chevrolet in Devine for 18 years, and the VP of Sales for Weno Exchange until he retired in 2021. A relentless truth seeker, Gene studied the Bible intensely and spread the Word of God to everyone he met. He loved the number seven because it was God’s number, and even replaced high fives with his signature ‘high seven’ after his granddaughter pointed out that touching their index fingers together made the number seven. Instead of a simple “I love you”, he’d say “I love you seven and forever.” Gene had a kind heart and compassionate spirit. He was dearly loved and will be missed by many.
He is survived by his wife, Laurie Ann (Wren) Morris; his parents, Cynthia Ann (Smith) Hanna, Jon Hanna; his children, Brandon Jesse Dominguez, Bethany Ann Smith and her husband Jonathan, Melissa Christine Wagoner, Matthew Gene Morris, his grandchildren, Abbie Renee Dominguez, Addison Parker Wagoner, Paxtynn Jade Wagoner, Lily Ann Smith, Charles Henry “Chaz” Dominguez, Lincoln Marie Wagoner, Jason James Dominguez; his siblings, Tina Lorraine (Morris) Goodman and her husband Shane, Kimberly Ann Morris, Jon Marcus Hanna and his wife Sarah, Kimberly Kay (Hanna) Norman and her husband Steve, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his dad, Berle Gene Morris, and his brother, Otis Vincent Morris.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 12, 2022 from 4:00-7:00 PM at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home in Castroville. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Devine. Interment will be at Black Creek Cemetery in Devine following the funeral.
