Freshmen Warhorses beat Pearsall, drop close contest to Harlandale

The Freshmen Warhorses are 1-2 on the season after rebounding from a close loss to Harlandale by knocking off the Pearsall Freshmen Mavericks.

Pearsall
Devine got on the board first, using back-to-back walks by Blaine Miller and Leonard Pompa and three consecutive singles by Dakota Wofford, Isiah Oropez, and Darrin Lafferty to take a 3-0 lead.
Two more runs came in the top of the 5th inning. Pompa singled and came around to score thanks to three passed balls. Wofford and Jesus Hernandez both walked, Clayton Brown singled, and Kaleb Nira was hit by a pitch to force in Wofford for a 5-1 lead.
The Freshmen Warhorses led 6-1 when Pearsall staged a huge rally in the bottom of the 6th inning, using two doubles, two singles, two hit batters, and two walks to surge to a 7-6 lead.
Instead of folding, Devine staged their own comeback in the top of the 7th inning to get the win.
Brown was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Matthew Sumners walked, Miller and Pompa followed with back-to-back singles to drive in Brown and Sumners to regain the lead at 8-7. Wofford drove in Miller and Pompa with a double to center field, then scored himself thanks to an error by the Pearsall third baseman. Isaac Oropeza reached base on a dropped third strike, stole second and third, and scored on Lafferty’s groundout to second to put Devine up 12-7.
The Freshman Warhorses held Pearsall scoreless in the bottom of the 7th inning to preserve the win.

Harlandale
A strong night of pitching from both Devine and Harlandale led to a 2-0 loss for the Freshmen Warhorses on Friday, March 3.
Mistakes by Devine contributed to Harlandale’s run in the bottom of the 1st inning. After notching a single, consecutive errors allowed the base runner to advance to third. He later scored on a ball for a 1-0 lead.
Harlandale’s other run of the game came in the bottom of the 2nd inning thanks to a double with two runners on.
