Devine’s Warhorse Stadium will be the site of this year’s 2017 29-4A District Track Meet. The site usually flips between one of the teams down south and here locally. The Warhorses enter the competition having won each of the six meets they have participated in this season. Championships at Pearsall, Poteet, Pleasanton, Jourdanton, Devine, and Somerset. Number 7 is within site if the previous six are any indication of how strong Coach Lynn Cozby’s track team has been this season.
The Arabian squad is coming off of an impressive showing at last week’s Somerset Pre-District Invitational. Devine racked up 196 points to easily win that meet to gain momentum going into this week’s district meet.
On Wednesday, April 5th the 3200m run will begin at 10:00 am. At 11:00 am, boys’ discus, triple jump, and high jump will be taking place as the girls are participating in shot put, long jump, and pole vault. Thursday, April 6th those events will flip from boys to girls and the start time will be later at 1:00 pm.
The 100m run preliminaries will begin Wednesday at 2:00 pm followed by the 110m hurdles, 100m dash, 400m dash, 300m hurdles, and the 200m dash. This schedule will not take long so be there promptly at 2 o’clock if you wish to see each race. Also, if an event has less than 8 total competitors, a preliminary heat will not be run and that event will be run as a final on Thursday.
Thursday’s running final heats begin at 5:00 pm. There will only be one race in each of the four divisions (JV girls, varsity girls, JV boys, varsity boys). Approximate times and events are as follows: 5:00 pm-400m relay, 5:20 pm-800m run, 5:40 pm-100m/110m hurdles, 6:00 pm-100m dash, 6:10 pm-800m relay, 6:20 pm-400m dash, 6:40 pm-300m hurdles, 7:00 pm-200m dash, 7:10 pm-1600m run, 7:30 pm-1600m relay. Times could possibly run slightly later due to reviews and unforeseen circumstances.
The top four finishers in each event will advance to the Area Meet held in Poteet on Wednesday, April 19. That schedule of events will be in next week’s edition of The Devine News.
