The DHS tennis team competed in a 20-team pre-District tournament featuring 2A to 6A schools last week in Uvalde.
Boys Singles
Mason Zenon finished 10th, falling to Luis Gonzales (Laredo Martin) 7-9, beating Miles Williams (Uvalde) 8-4, and finishing with a 2-8 loss to Michael Tren (Killeen).
Caeden Alvarez was 14th, dropping matches to Andrew Melchor of Uvalde (0-8), Amye Bryce of Brackett (2-8), and Thomas Neaves of Highlands (4-8).
Girls Singles
Lindsey Spannagel took 3rd, beating Heather McGee (Hondo) 8-2 and Neami Muniz (Burbank) 6-1 6-0 before falling to Briana Sanchez (Sabinal) 3-6 2-6. Spannagel bounced back with a 8-0 win over Analisa Diaz (Crystal City) to take 3rd.
Chloe Serafin finished 11th, losing 3-8 to Rebecca Galino of Madison and 5-8 to Sarah Heckee of Medina Valley before finishing with an 8-5 win over Avery Brymer (Pleasanton).
Boys Doubles
Toby Ramos and Jake Harrell finished 3rd, beating Guerra/Guerra (Uvalde) 8-4 and Saileebal/Ramos (Killeen) 6-5, 5-7 (10-2), before falling to Rodriguez/Covarrubias (Eagle Pass Winn) 6-4, 5-7 (7-9). They ended the day with an 8-6 win over Hernandez/Morales (Laredo Cigarroa) to take 3rd.
Ralph Rios and Colton Bean finished 8th, falling 0-6 2-6 to Barrera/Barrera (Laredo Nixon) and 2-6 4-6 to Jimenez/Flores (Eagle Pass Winn) before winning their final match due to a forfeit.
Girls Doubles
Lydia Zapata and Scarlett Smith took 2nd place, beating Ramirez/Norman (Killeen) 6-0 2-6 (10-7), and Solis/Lange (Hondo) 6-4 6-3 before falling to Vermer/Vermer (Madison) in the title match 5-7 3-6.
Preslee Quisenberry and Ariel Lopez finished in 3rd place, beating Coyle/Essary (Medina Valley) 6-4 6-2, losing to Nguyen/Massiates (Madison) 5-7 4-6, and finishing with a 6-1 7-5 win over Zimmerman/Bas (Uvalde).
Mixed Doubles
Abbie Capps and Jaime Garza won 1st place, sweeping Moncada/Gallegos (Crystal City) 8-2, Hernandez/Bast (Pleasanton) 6-4 6-4, Esparza/Flood (Laredo Nixon) 7-5 6-2, and Hernandez/Jones (Hond) 6-1 6-3.
Julia Harrell and Tristan Wood took 5th place, beating Magana/Arana (Laredo Martin) 9-8 (7-2), falling to Lopez/Banda 6-0 4-6 (7-10), and beating Boyd/Gonzales (Madison) 7-5 6-1.
“They played very well, and we are expecting great things at District,” Coach Melanie Sostarich said.
The District 29-4A tournament was this past Monday and Tuesday, April 3 and 4 in Uvalde. Results will be in next week’s edition of The Devine News.
