The Devine High School Varsity Symphonic Winds earned straight ONES in both Concert & Sight-Reading last week earning the UIL Sweepstakes Award! The UIL Concert & Sight-Reading Evaluation was hosted in the DHS Band Hall at 9:45 am last Wednesday, March 4.
The Symphonic Winds have been preparing for several months for this annual UIL event, normally held off-campus for bands across the Region. This year to provide a safe environment, UIL decided to have the judges travel campus to campus – spreading the contest over several days.
The students were prepared and dressed in formal wear for the event – and achieved maintaining a very high standard which has been set now for several years. Music performed included: The “Avenger March” by King, “Down by the Salley Gardens” by Sweeney, and a new selection to the UIL list “Viva” by Jack Wilds.
Comments from the judges included: “Nice band sound!”; “Band – this is a very challenging program!”; “Good style”; “Good ensemble precision”; “Overall – a very musical performance!!” Despite the challenges we have all faced throughout the past year, our students did not allow the standards to fall – we all fought through it together – and there has been a wonderful, successful result!
The Devine High School Bands are lead by Jeff. W. Miller, BME, MM, Director of Bands and Assistant Director Tom Settles and Assistant Director James Quinterro.
