County commissioners authorize bids for construction, renovation

Medina County commissioners authorized advertising for sealed bids for the construction and renovation of the building located at 1402 Avenue M in Hondo during their court meeting on May 21.

The building will host the District Attorney, County Health Unit, and WIC offices.

County Judge Chris Schuchart said final drawings weren’t yet done, but requested that commissioners approve soliciting bids to get the process started because WIC needs the office completed by November 29.

“The [current] Health Unit building is under contract with the hospital,” Schuchart said. “We want to close it in November, and we will take that money to reimburse us for whatever some of the expenses are for us to do this.”

The building that houses the DA’s current office is being sold.

“If y’all recall, in the interlocal between Uvalde and Real County, we’re going to get somewhere in the neighborhood of $180,000 to $200,000 back that is going to go toward paying for the DA’s portion of this,” Schuchart said. “The WIC people are kind of like a godsend because WIC, whatever it costs for us to do the WIC portion of this building, they’ll pay for it. We don’t even have to pay for it.

“So all of this, I hope, is going to be either paid for by DA reimbursement and/or selling the hospital building.”
