Temporary home needed for local family

The Garza family who lost their home to a fire in the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 3, is still in need of a temporary shelter such as a camper trailer or RV to call home.
They will forever be grateful for the outpouring of clothing and donations the community has given, and are now looking for a place to start over.
Their home which was located on family land on FM 2200 near Devine has been deemed a total loss, along with all of their possessions.
If you have a RV or mobile home you’d like to donate, please contact the girl’s grandmother Katie at 210-413-9602 or you may reach out to The Devine News office.

ARABIAN TRACK DISTRICT 29-4A CHAMPIONS!

Kourtni Geyer broke the Devine High School record, with her 10’ 4” pole vault. The record was previously held by Brianna Bowyer who hit 10’3” in 2021.
Kylie Monreal smoked ‘em in the 300M hurdles with a time of 45.30, setting a new DHS record as well. That record was previously held by Dakota Dougherty in 2008 with 45.49.

District Championships for the Arabian Track Team are nothing new, and nothing new happened once again in Floresville Wednesday, April 3-4 as Devine posted 174 points to ease past runner-up Floresville who put up 162 points. Pleasanton was a distant third place with 97 points.

Natalia Bluebonnet Parade& Festival, Eclipse Viewing will be a 3-day EVENT

The parade kicks off at 11am Saturday.

This year’s Natalia Bluebonnet Parade and Festival will be a 3-day celebration this year. The Parade will kick things off on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 11:00 am and will follow the same Parade route as in the past starting on 8th Street and FM 471 and going into town, turning left on Hwy 132 heading south. For more information, call Brenda Fernandez at 210-744-2204. Afterward, bring your lawn chairs on over to the festival grounds for a day at the future site of Natalia’s Community Center!

Natalia City Hall has eclipse glasses for sale for $2, and t-shirts for sale as well.
The City of Natalia will have several viewing areas. Please be mindful and courteous of neighboring private properties and businesses. Please do not block driveways. There will also be available food and drinks for sale at the locations as well as several restaurants located within in the city.

Designated Viewing Areas –
Veterans Memorial Park / NMDD property – 2079 State Hwy 132 S. ** restrooms at City Hall across the street.
Natalia Little League Park – 108 3rd Street (corner of FM 471 & State HWY 132) **restrooms
Haywood Park – 605 Bennett Street. **restrooms
The locations will be marked with signs and parking areas. You may stop by City Hall on your way into town to pick up a map of other available locations.

Traffic may force street closures, Eclipse event at Warhorse Stadium

All of the following streets may be closed to thru traffic as soon as Thursday, April 4, which is a few days before the eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024. Officials expect a large amount of travelers to travel straight through Devine on Hwy 173 while on their way to Bandera and Kerrville who expect thousands of visitors to come watch the eclipse in the Hill Country, which has been called “ground zero” as it is best place to view it.

National Weather Service conducts storm spotter training in Hondo

Medina County currently holds the record for the largest scientifically measured hailstone ever collected by the National Weather Service, said Paul Yura, warning coordination meteorologist for the Austin-San Antonio Weather Forecast Office.
Yura presented a three-dimensional representation of the 6.4 inch diameter hailstone during the annual SKYWARN weather spotter training held March 27 in Hondo. The actual hailstone weighed 1.26 pounds when measured seven days after it fell on April 28, 2021.
“It had been put in a freezer but not in a Ziplock bag,” Yura said. “Ice continues to evaporate, so the original hailstone was even bigger.”
Experts traveled from South Carolina to conduct the 3-D scan of the massive hailstone…

Traveling through the Texas Hill Country, the total solar eclipse will take place on April 8, 2024. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, the moon will start to block the sun around noon, with totality beginning at 1:30 p.m.
The total eclipse is expected to encompass much of San Antonio and South Texas in total darkness.
