Going into Tuesday night’s (Feb13) District 29-4A closing ballgames, five teams remained alive for four possible spots going into the state playoffs. Devine was one of those five.
Somerset is more than likely going to end their league schedule at 12-0 as they took on Uvalde who was 3-8 and already eliminated from playoff contention prior to tipoff. Pleasanton played their last game February 9 and closed at 3-9 and out of the race as well.
Floresville is steady at the #2 seed so whether they defeated…

Arabians either outright champions or co-champs after Floresville game
Jerel Beaty
Staff Writer
Head Coach Jim Sessions and Arabian Nation is waking up this morning already knowing whether they are the outright District 29-4A Champions or if they have the Co-Champ distinction after last night’s league-closing tilt against the Jaguars.
Devine was 11-0 and Floresville was 10-1 going into the February 6 affair with the only blemish on the Jaguars record was a 44-30 loss to the Arabians back on January 12.
vs Somerset
As one can surmise from the 50-22 score of this one, the Arabians led in all major statistical categories in route to their 26th win of the season over the Lady Bulldogs in Somerset. Natalie Valle led the way with 17 points, Denise Contreras added 16 while defensively Valle, Liah Romero, Airyanna Rodriguez, and Kylie Monreal alternated swatting shot attempts…

Devine took a huge step in possibly qualifying for the state playoffs as they took down Pearsall last Friday 60-50 on the Mavericks home court. This win put Devine back in the fourth spot of District 29-4A but still need some magic to happen over the course of their last three games.
vs Pearsall
The Horses used a big 19-5 second quarter surge to help them defeat Pearsall 60-50 on February 2. Devine dropped their first two games of the season against Pearsall by double digits each time but was more than ready for the challenge in this one as they built a lead as big as 19 points before closing out the 10-point win.
Even though the Horses were the visitors, they shot the ball well, hitting 40% of their shots while holding the Mavericks to 32% on their home court. Devine also made 10 of 18 free throws compared to 3 of 12 for their counterparts.
Four Horses hit double figures led by Tanner Davis and Makhi Burford who each drained 16 points while Mason Beaver and Elijah Contreras each scored 10. Contreras had a good night on the glass as well hauling down 9 rebounds.
Stats vs Pearsall

The next time these band of 8th grade Filly hoopsters take the court will be as freshman Arabians as Devine played its season finale last Monday against Uvalde.
“Overall, it was a successful season for both teams,” stated Coach Leigh Anne McIver. “Their growth was evident each time they stepped onto the court. They were pushed to get out of their comfort zones each day in practice. I feel like they really grew their knowledge on how to move the ball around on offense and how to look for the open spots/players against different defenses.”
The Fillys were aggressive…
