Pirates flying high as Owls swoop into town

Lytle Pirate Weston Jackson leaves Poteet behind on a touchdown run down the sideline. By R Gonzalez.

Kickoff is 7pm

The Pirate flag sits atop District 14-3A DI standings at 1-0 after their dramatic 19-18 victory in Poteet. Lytle is currently riding a five-game winning streak, three of which were of the comeback variety.
That top-spot is shared with San Antonio Cole and Jourdanton who are also 1-0. Hondo, Poteet, and Crystal City are currently 0-1. Hondo started the season with three straight victories that included wins over Banco (49-38), Carrizo Springs (40-6), and Uvalde (39-34) before dropping three straight that began with a 46-19 drubbing at the hands of Devine. The Owls lost their last nonconference game in Bandera 38-6 to the Bulldogs before dropping their district-opener October 11. After Lytle, Hondo closes the season at home against Crystal City, on the road in Jourdanton, and against Poteet at Barry Field.
Pirates plunder Aggies’ booty 19-18
Poteet more than likely thought they were well on their way to victory as they took what looked like to them an insurmountable 18-6 lead over Lytle in the early stages of the third quarter of last Friday’s District 14-3A DI opener in Aggieland.
However, no one associated with Pirate Nation was even remotely surprised that Lytle came storming back to take the 19-18 victory in yet another electrifying ending to a Pirate ballgame.
If, in fact, the Aggies counted the Pirates out before the final buzzer sounded, then they did a poor job pre-scouting these “cardiac kids” as Lytle now has three impressive comeback victories under their bandolier, all of which were against current or former Class 4A programs in Bandera, Carrizo Springs, and now Class 3A Poteet.
Sitting at 5-1 overall but more importantly at 1-0 in district standings, Lytle kept alive its pursuit of a gold ball while the ‘gig’ is possibly up for the Aggies as their own dreams of a title are now severely hampered at 0-1 with only four games to go before the state playoffs.

The JV Arabian volleyball team hit a couple of bumps in the road in recent games as they lost tow of their last three games. Devine lost to Floresville (0-2) and Carrizo Springs (1-2) while sandwiching in a victory over Uvalde in between.
The Jaguars won by consecutive 25-22 scores and the Wildcats battled to a three-set win winning the last set 15-12.
Devine had a tough test in the first set against Uvalde, coming out on top 25-20. The Arabians put their foot down in set two 25-14, erasing any doubt who the better team was that night.

Warhorse tidbits, stats, & scoring summary

Jerel Beaty
Staff writer
One for the ages, cont.
I have personally only been associated with Warhorse football for the past 27 seasons, which is chump-change for many of you who are reading this edition of “Tidbits.”
My memory is fading and useless stuff clouds what is left of my mind most of the time, but I cannot for the life of me remember either being a part of or being in the stands for a more enjoyable and memorable regular season ballgame than the one Devine and Marble Falls played last Friday night at Warhorse Stadium.
It had a little bit of everything and including, most importantly, the happiest of all endings that saw Devine put together their best offensive drive of the season that culminated in a winning touchdown with only 15 seconds left on the functioning scoreboard in the north end zone.
That Enoch Hall touchdown (who is a freshman, by the way) followed by the post-score extra-point combination of snapper EJ Gonzales getting the ball to holder Jacob Sollock to place it on the ground nicely for kicker Teotimo Stafford was sandwiched between a monumental defensive stop that resulted in only three points instead of seven (yes, holding Mable Falls to a field goal instead of a potential two-possession lead that would have been the case had they gotten into the end zone is 100% considered a stop at that point of the game) and a game-ending sack of the Mustang quarterback by Riley Gutierrez as the clock ticked dry put all of Warhorse Nation that was in attendance in an ultimate state of euphoria that more than likely it had not experienced since Devine pulled victory from the jaws of defeat against Hondo in 2002 when Kyle Pilaczynski blocked an Owl punt that Angel Gonzalez scooped and scored for the winning touchdown in the waning moments of that exciting ballgame.
Runner-up
The only other possible regular season game to even mention over the last quarter-century is the 2015 50-49 win Warhorse win at Barry Field in Hondo. Devine led comfortably at halftime 35-14 at halftime…or at least it seemed comfortable as the Owls found a little magic to take a 49-42 lead with 0:59 left.
The Horses got the last say that particular night as receiver Beau Cardenas hauled in a Dillon Ricord 30-yard pass with only :32 ticks left.
Not wanting to hear that dad burned victory bell ring after the game, then Head Coach Chad Quisenberry relied on the…

JV1 Horses bid for perfect season falls short

JV Warhorses take on Marble Falls. Photo by Brigid Howard.

District begins Thursday with 5pm kickoff

Jerel Beaty
Staff writer
Dag Burn It! The JV1 Horses had a perfect 5-0 record going into their road game in Marble Falls last Thursday but came out 5-1 after the Mustangs escaped with a 28-20 win.
Devine was down but definitely not out even facing a 22-8 deficit at the break. The Horses closed to within a two-point conversion at 22-20 but could not tie it up nor take the lead before the final horn sounded.
“We kept battling all game long, even after Marble Falls had three first half touchdown passes” said Coach Lon Cozby. “We had a few injuries set us back a little, but we still had a chance late in the game and that is all I could ask for.”
Late game magic was possible, but it would have taken more than a good share of it as starting running back Ryan Weinkam exited the contest in the second quarter, and other Warhorses also were unable to continue as Devine finished the game with only seven healthy players standing on the sideline.
Marble Falls connected on their first of three first half touchdown passes to take a 6-0 lead. Weinkam intercepted their two-point attempt near the goal line and returned it 99 yards the other direction to make the score 6-2.
“Ryan was able to show off…

Natalia suffers tough Homecoming set-back

2024 Royal Couple King Carlo Alonso and Queen Kira Jimenez

Eric Smith
The Natalia Mustangs(1-4, 0-2) suffered a tough Homecoming loss last Friday night at the hands of the Karnes City Badgers (4-1, 1-1). Three Natalia turnovers combined with missed tackles, injuries and an explosive KC offense resulted in a 50-14 Badger victory. In the end, this continues to be a work in progress for a group of youthful, hard working young men and a 1st year staff in Natalia.
“We did not make enough plays on offense early in the game to keep us in it,” Natalia Head Coach Jason Reynolds said. “We have to do a better job of playing complimentary football against good teams like KC.”
The Badgers may have been picked dead-last by Dave Campbell Texas Football, but they came out playing like a top-3 district teams last Friday in Natalia. They showcased a beefy line with a lot of talent in the back-field and a stringy defense that did not make a lot of mistakes.
Natalia struggled to establish their line of scrimmage offensively as starting QB Leo Cortinas came back from injury. Unfortunately, he went back down with a tweak to his injury resulting in back-up QB Mason Giera coming in.
Giera had a number of bright spots with success thru the air…

Pirate XC Perfect Score at District 28-3A Meet

The Lytle Pirates and Lady Pirates crusied to district championships in Cross Country! Photo by L Wilson.

Alvarez individual champ; Salazar, Montes-Rodriguez, D. Reyna, Esquivez, & Garza top 6
7th Straight District Championship!

Jerel Beaty
Staff writer
The Pirate Cross Country team pitched what would be considered a perfect game by baseball standards as they swept the first six places in Monday’s District 28-3A Meet in Dilley.
Although the first five runners to cross the finish line are the only scores to go into the counting of a team score, Lytle earned the sixth individual place as well on their way to another District Championship.
The Pirates claimed their 7th straight District Championship and their 15th overall since 2003.
Johnny Rey Alvarez, Lucas Salazar, Bryan Montes-Rodriguez, Diego Reyna, and Yandel Esquivez accumulated the lowest score possible, 15, as they finished one through five in the standings. Nathan Garza was the sixth and final runner to toe the line for Lytle.
The whole Pirate team was well ahead of their competition throughout the entirety of the race as each finished between 16:14 and 17:04.
The 7th place runner from Dilley did not come into the picture frame until the 17:22 mark, as most of the Pirates were already smiling for a team photo by that time.
Alvarez led the Pirate-parade as he finished his 5K in 16:14.06.
Thirteen seconds later Salazar and Montes-Rodriguez were fighting it out for that runner-up spot as a small sunray is all…

Jerel Beaty

The Lady Pirates outran Hondo to capture their fifth straight Cross Country District Championship Monday in Dilley. Lytle scored 24 points to the Lady Owls 36 and also claimed five of the top eight spots in the field of 44 runners.
Frances Scotello, Svetlana Lopez, Elyse Cortinas, Addison Wagner, and Kaycee Galindo were in the top 8 spots and accounted for Lytle’s point total. They were joined on the championship stage by Annika Robles and Klayre Cook who had nice outings as well placing in the top 15.
Scotello continued her amazing season by winning the individual championship with a time of 12:02.50, which was nearly 22-seconds better than teammate Lopez.
Lopez was the only other runner in the competition who timed…
