Born on 25 November 1946 in Fort Worth, Texas, Judy was the child of Rev. Paul W. Heckmann and Bernadine Emma Heckmann, née Zabel. She was baptized into the Christian faith by her father on 8 December 1946 at Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Worth. She was confirmed in her faith on 5 June 1961 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Odessa, Texas, also by her father. Judy lived her life for Christ, as expressed in her confirmation verse: “and He died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for Him who for their sake died and was raised” (2 Corinthians 5:15).
Judy graduated with a degree in education from Concordia University, Nebraska. She taught early elementary at Lutheran schools, was a secretary/church secretary, and was a church organist. She was an avid and talented organist. She began playing the organ while she was in high school, and she continued to play at both Divine Savior and at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in San Antonio well into her 70’s. She also sang in church choirs and the San Antonio Chorale at various times in her life. Judy was known for her love for the Lord, her love of music, and her cross-stitch. Her legacy in Laredo, Texas, includes the hardware store they started on Clark Street. She was proud of the time she accidentally bought every color of Formica you can imagine and was delivered by an 18-wheeler to the store. Luckily, due to the high demand, they were the only store in Laredo that carried it and they were able to sell it all! She always laughed when she said that story.

She took immense pride in nurturing, guiding them and teaching her daughters how to cook. She was an avid naturalist with her herbal remedies, natural hair dyes, and face lotions. One of her favorite sayings was “Soy de rancho,” meaning “I’m from the ranch”, that tells you that she loved her home, her plants and the deer that would occasionally show up at her bedroom window. She was also a gentle spirit that dedicated and devoted her life to Jehovah God.
She was a loving mother to her children: Diana S. Rodriguez (Agustin), Ruth S. Hill (John), Omar aka Mayo Sepulveda (Kathy), Victor H. Sepulveda (Norma) and Miriam S. Garcia (Randy). She is also survived by her grandchildren: Miguel Sepulveda, Raquel Alfaro, Tomas Sepulveda, Jovan Hill, and Cassandra Wickes who will forever hold them love, warmth, wisdom, and her sense of humor she received from her grandmother, along with numerous great grandchildren.
