With two new members taking office, the Medina County Appraisal District board of directors voted Jan. 9 to apply the majority of a $114,000 budget surplus to the building fund for a proposed new headquarters building.
On a motion by board member Jody Jacobs, seconded by new vice chairperson Kyla Burrell, the board voted 4-0 to apply $84,000 of the surplus to the building fund.

Board members for two Devine-based emergency services districts were officially appointed to new two-year terms Jan. 8 during a regular session of the Medina County Commissioners’ Court in Hondo.

In other business, the commissioners voted to accept a donation of fog seal totaling $46,738 to demonstrate its effectiveness in road building. Fog seal is an application of a specially formulated asphalt emulsion to an existing asphalt pavement surface.
Castiglione said that one of the worst things for the base structure of roadways is penetration by water.

Medina County Sheriff Randy Brown urged the Devine City Council at the November 21 council meeting to review its original management contract with SG Golf Management regarding any issues with water being diverted outside the city golf course for private use.

The Lytle City Council voted Monday to reject a proposal to lower the speed limit throughout the city to 25 mph after mostly negative comments during a public hearing on the issue.
On a motion by District 4 Alderman Michael Rodriguez the council voted 4-0 to leave the speed at its present limit.

The Devine City Council voted to cast its 81 votes for former county commissioners Jerry Beck to represent the city as a member of the Medina County Appraisal District board of directors. The action made official the council’s previously announced decision to back Beck.
Add Little League to city parks
The council discussed at length a proposal by Cook for the city to take charge of mowing the city’s Little League Park in the off season as part of the city’s renewed contract with local Little League.

2 running for mayor, 3 running for council on Nov. 7 ballot
In the upcoming Mayor’s race….Natalia Mayor Chip Bluemel (incumbent) will be running against Tommy Ortiz (who is currently serving on council).
Also, three candidates are running for 2 at-large positions on Natalia City Council. Candidates are Darrin Frazier (incumbent), Ruby Vera (formerly mayor), and former police chief Valerie Naff.
In the school board election, candidates Paul Almendarez and Tiffany Rodriguez are unopposed.
