Festival, games, fishing, hayrides and more fundraiser Oct. 26th thanking life-saving heroes at Bigfoot Fire department

Mark your calendars, it’s gonna be a fun event! One local family is hosting a very special fund raiser for the Bigfoot Volunteer Fire Department this coming Saturday, Oct. 26 after seeing first-hand the amazing way these heroes help our community in times of crisis.
The event will be an old-fashioned fall festival/haunted hay ride, with lots of games for the kids. Cash only! There will be lots of old-school kids games, as well as fishing and the haunted hayride. Kids will also get to see the big fire trucks.
Bobby Thompson, of Bigfoot, shares a little about what inspired the family to host this event…
“On July 4th, 2023, my family had our family reunion at my place in Bigfoot. Two teenagers were leaving my house about 10 pm that evening when a hog ran out in front of their vehicle. They swerved to miss the hog and over corrected, rolling their truck.”

“Both boys were ejected from the truck and landed in the ditch on separate sides of the road. Both were seriously injured,” Thompson said. “We called 9-1-1 and the Bigfoot Volunteer Fire Department arrived in a very short time. The Bigfoot Volunteer Fire Department was very professional and administered what I believe was life-saving medical attention to the boys.”
“My family owes a great amount of gratitude to the Bigfoot Volunteer Fire Department,” Thompson adds. “They sacrifice personal family time to be volunteers and it is evident that these volunteers are 100% committed to our community. In a rural area, we are blessed to have these high-quality committed volunteers.”

Sale Oct. 6th in Castroville

Zion Lutheran Church will be hosting their annual Ham Dinner on Sunday, October 6th. You can stay and eat or drive-thru. Serving time will be 11 am to 1 pm. Plates are $12 and consist of ham, potato salad, slaw, beans, bread, tea and cake.
There will also be a giant rummage sale on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 5 and 6, as well as a silent auction, quilt drawing and kids’ activities. Music will be provided by Joyful Noise.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Medina County Food Pantry.
Everyone is welcome to join us for worship at 10 am. We are located at 1106 Fiorella St in Castroville.

The Klondike Bar will be hosting a Chili Cook-Off on October 26, 2024 at 2 p.m. The contest will consist of three categories for teams to compete in: Chili with Beans, Chili without Beans, and People’s Choice. The contest is open to the public. Winners will be announced at 4 p.m. and there will be “hot” prizes involved! See the ad on page 2 for further details on this event and sign up today

American Legion Post 443, will honor all Vietnam Veterans with a Special Ceremony on November 11, 2024, at 10:00 am in Natalia Texas in front of the Veterans Memorial Monument. ALL Vietnam Veterans (those who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time during the period of November 1, 1955 to May 15th, 1975 regardless of duty location), widows of Vietnam Veterans and orphans of Vietnam Veterans will be honored at this ceremony. Please join us as we say Thank You for your Service.
Veterans Day Ceremony – Natalia Texas
The annual Veterans Day Ceremony in Natalia Texas will be held on Monday, November 11th, 2024 at 11:00 am in front of Veterans Memorial Monument. A full ceremony will be presented to give tribute to Veterans of all United States of America Services. Four (4) new names will be added to the monument this year.  We hope everyone will come and join us in our Annual Event.
Additionally, we will be hosting representatives from the Devine Current Events Club who are involved with the Wreaths Across America. Ms Martha Wall will be available to provide information and sell wreaths that will be laid on the graves at the Evergreen and St. Joseph’s Cemeteries before Christmas.

Devine VFW Post 3966 charity bingo is open to the public. Proceeds from bingo fund our Post’s charitable giving to our community. We hold bingo every Thursday and doors open at 4:30 pm. We start selling pull tabs and bingo games at 5:30 pm. The first Thursday of every month we will have a $1000 Pull Tab. Pull tabs will be played when each game of pull tabs sells out. We start regular bingo at 7:00pm and usually finish just before 10:00 pm. Food, snacks and drinks are available. Our Post and Bingo Hall are located at 211 W. College Ave., Devine, TX, across from the Devine US Post Office.
Devine VFW Post 3966 charity bingo no longer has computer bingo (handsets). The reason for discontinuing the computers is two-fold. Rent on the computers is expensive and was not justified with only one use per week. The other reason is that Post members felt that the computers gave an advantage to people who used them and thus were unfair. Grab your daubers and come out for a night of fun and help us build our regular crowd so that we can increase the game payouts. If attendance is over 110 players, the jackpots for regular Bingo will be raised $100 (to $300 and $600).
This Thursday on October 3, 2024, we will have a $1000 pull tab bingo pot. The $10 tickets will be first come, first serve. Multiple pull tabs may be purchased. If there is enough demand, we will have more than one $1000 pull tab, as we did in May.

VFW Post 3966 of Devine is seeking nominations for VFW Teacher of the Year at all three levels: elementary, middle, and high schools. (We need at least one nominee from each level.)
*All current certified/licensed teachers grades K-12 eligible (prior national winners excluded)
*Nomination can be submitted by themselves, fellow teachers, supervisors, family members, or
other interested individuals.
*To nominate, complete entry form, with a 1-page resume, or up to five pages of documentation of their teaching experience

Citizenship: Encouraging/modeling good citizenship & community involvement

October 9 at 7:00 pm at EMS building

The Medina County Emergency Services District # 4 will hold its regularly scheduled meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM on October 9, 2024 at the EMS station, 206 Dixon Dr. Devine, TX 78016.
An agenda has not been posted as of press time Tuesday morning, but would have to be posted by this Friday, October 4 end of the day on their website under ESD/ Agenda tab at medinacountyesd4.org
Jerry Beck has been approved by the Medina County Commissioners to take the vacant seat on the board.
The ESD4 decided to continue the contract with Allegiance at the last board meeting instead of starting their own EMS service at this time after a push back from the community about a proposed tax raise and unanswered questions.

Show and Sale Oct 19th

There will be a quilt show and sale on Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 10 am. To 2 pm. (rain or shine).
This is a free outdoor even with over 90 quilts on display. Quilts offered are from crib size to queen size.

Devine Oct. 5

Gary Hobbs to headline live music
Live entertainment will take place all day Saturday, October 5, 2024 during the annual St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Octoberfest with accomplished Tejano artists Gary Hobbs headlining the evening concert opened up by Los Escorpiones Del Norte. Live entertainment also includes singer/songwriter Cheyenne Saenz of Von Ormy, Mariachis, Folklorico dancers, and square dancers round out the live entertainment. There will be a $5.00 entry fee only.
The festival includes food and drink booths and craft booths all day. BBQ Plates, family fun, children’s games and activities. A cash Bingo. Silent Auction. Corn hole.
The annual drawing with lots of nice prizes will take place Saturday as well. The grand prize is a Ford Maverick Truck donated by Chaparral Ford -Devine & Lytle. Tickets for the drawing are $10. The beautiful blue truck can be seen in the parking lot of the church daily with the sign on it “Win Me”. A list of the prizes are on the ticket which can be purchased at the church office or from parishioners.
St. Joseph’s is located at 108 S. Washington St., Devine, Texas.
Octoberfest will take place all day on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 11:00 am to 11:30 pm.
