Brigadier General Joseph David Schott

Brigadier General Joseph David Schott, U.S. Army, retired, of La Coste, entered eternal rest on January 26, 2019. He was born on July 26, 1936 in Devine, one of seven children of George L. Schott and Helen Netherland Schott. He was eighty-two years old.
In 1954, he graduated from Devine High School. He earned a BS in Agriculture Education from Texas A & I and was in the ROTC. David served in the Army for thirty years. He was in Vietnam for 24 months serving as a Major, Captain and Lt. Colonel. He was with the Army Staff at the Pentagon for 15 months. His last command was with the 5th Signal Command in Ft. Monmouth, NJ. He received three bronze stars during his service in the Army.
“The General” as he was affectionately called by his friends, was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and St. Louis Men’s Society.
On November 28, 1957, he married Jerry Jane Kipps at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Devine. They were blessed with sixty-one years of marriage, four children, ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Survivors include hiswife,Jerry Jane Kipps Schott of La Coste; children, David Wayne Schott of La Coste, Walter Ray (Sheila) Schott of La Coste, Kathleen (William) DiCola of Fredericksburg, VA and Wallace Schott of Fredericksburg, VA; 10 grandchildren, Daniel (Ariana) Schott, Samantha Schott, Chelsea Schott, Kari Jo Schott, Jessica (Nathan) Lessing, Katie Schott, Carlie (Bryan) Gillispie, Kyle DiCola, Sara (James) Loving and Augusta Schott; 8 great-grandchildren, Wyatt Schott, Joseph Schott, Bryce Schott, Waylon Schott, Gage Lessing, Crew Lessing, DelylaGillispie and Beorn Loving; sisters, Evelyn Thompson and Joyce Rihn; brother, Roger Schott; in-laws, Marlene Schott, Beth Schott and Katherine Eastman;as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
David was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George Schott, Randy Schott and Claude Schott; in-laws, Denis Rihn, Tommy Thompson and Frankie Finch.
Visitation will be Monday, February 4, 2019 at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. The Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm followed by the Mass of the Resurrection on Monday, February 4, 2019 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville. The Funeral Procession will depart the Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at 8:15 am for burial with full military honors at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio at 9:30 am.
