The Varsity Arabians’ season came to an unexpected end at the hands of the Somerset Lady Bulldogs last Thursday, April 27, in a 3-1 Bi-District loss.
All of Somerset’s runs came in the bottom of the 1st inning, thanks to three singles and a double. Arabian pitcher Amanda Wilson held the Lady Bulldogs, third-place finishers from District 30-4A, to just six singles scattered throughout the remaining five innings of the game, but Devine wasn’t able to muster enough offense to overcome the early deficit.
“We really played a good game,” Head Coach Mark Mangold said. “We didn’t have any errors, and had very questionable call at first base that went against us that cost us a run and stopped our momentum.”
The Arabians’ sole run came in the top of the 2nd inning. Designated hitter Jenna Sadler reached on an error to start the inning and eventually came around to score on Kim Freeman’s grounder to third base.
Overall, Devine had five hits and two walks to Somerset’s 10 hits. The Lady Bulldogs committed two errors, and both teams left seven runners on base.
“We had multiple hits and some multiple base hits we just didn’t string our hits together,” Mangold said. “We had a lot of great games, made a lot of great plays, and we really did a great job this year inside the lines.”
Devine went 6-2 in District 29-4A to finish as runner-up to the Pearsall Lady Mavericks, and ended with an overall record of 21-7.
