The Varsity Arabians displayed both a potent offense and strong pitching in a 13-0 win over Carrizo Springs last Wednesday, April 12.
Devine didn’t score until the 2nd inning, but when they did, they didn’t stop. Brittany Jay singled to lead off the inning, Amanda Wilson walked, and Brooklyn Anderson drove in Jay with a single to center field. Jessie Ramirez singled in Wilson, Julie Ortiz reached base, and Taylor Carr knocked in Anderson with a sacrifice fly to center. Jaylyn Stewart reached on an error that allowed Ortiz to score, and Korin Stehle singled to left-center field to drive in Stewart for a 5-0 lead.
After Wilson faced the minimum number of Lady Wildcat batters in the top of the 3rd inning, the Arabians added five more runs. Jay led off the inning with a walk, Anderson singled, and Ortiz reached on a two-out error that allowed Jay to score. Carr stepped up to the plate with Anderson and Ortiz on the bases and blasted a three-run homer to straightaway center field, and Stewart followed up with a solo shot to center to put Devine up 10-0.
Carrizo Springs went in order again in the top of the 4th inning, while Devine added three insurance runs. Jay hit a one-out double, Wilson singled, and Ramirez hit a two-out single to short left field to drive in Jay. Ortiz drew a walk, and Carr hit a two-run double to left to increase the Arabians’ lead to 13-0.
The Lady Wildcats finally got some traction in the top of the 5th inning with three singles, but two strikeouts and an out on the base paths stifled the attempted rally and left Devine with the win.
Devine had 13 hits, four walks, and left five runners on base.
“Taylor Carr made a great catch at the fence,” Head Coach Mark Mangold said. “Jaylyn Stewart went a long way in center field to catch a fly ball in the gap. Korin hit a line drive at the fence to drive in a run. Jenna Sadler turned a ground ball into an out to get the lead runner at third. Brittany Jay made a diving catch at first for the third out of the 4th inning. Anderson was solid at the plate.
“We’ve been working on staying loaded in the cages and tonight it paid off in bunches.”
Wilson turned in another solid performance on the mound, pitching all five innings and giving up just four hits in the game. She also recorded five strikeouts.
