Active COVID-19 cases at 60; Hondo, Castroville, Devine have most across county

While the number of active cases has thankfully declined, the number of active cases in Medina County are still high at 60 ACTIVE CASES as of this Tuesday, August 25 around noon. County officials are awaiting results from a recent round of testing at Community Care Home, which has perhaps been hit the hardest by an outbreak of COVID in residents and staff. The county is also waiting for more clear results from a recent free testing site in Natalia after some confusion on what kind of tests were done.
Right now, Hondo (19), Castroville (18) and Devine (11) have the highest # of active cases reported at this time.

Overall there have been 941 cases of COVID-19 in local residents, up by almost a hundred when compared to last week’s figures. Part of those 97 newly reported cases went into the active category while another chunk went straight into the recovery category due to delays in reporting to the county.
On August 24th, the county also reported two more deaths of community members which brought the total impact to 24 deaths, and 2 more hospitalizations this past week brings the total to 83 hospitalizations.
Comparison to last week’s numbers: On Tuesday, August 18, Medina County had reported 844 total cases (with 104 active), 22 deaths, and 81 hospitalizations (this number is likely low due to failure to report all hospitalizations).
On August 3, Medina County had 60 active cases before rising to an all-time high of 100+ active cases in the following 2 weeks.
Regarding the free testing done at the Natalia City Hall by a mobile clinic, Medina County Health Unit Director Trish Mechler stated, “The Natalia testing did antibody testing and PCR testing. We called them and they said you could choose what you wanted or could do both. It is not clear to me what they sent out if it is recommending 14 day quarantine based on antibody testing or PCR testing since I don’t know who had what done. They said results of anyone who took a PCR test should get results back in several days and they will also send results to us. It is just confusing….Sorry for the lack of info.”
