Active cases in Medina County rise to 81; outbreak hits nursing home

Medina County officials were sad to report a new outbreak at a local nursing home. There are now 20 residents and 20 staff members who tested positive at Community Care in Hondo.

They also emphasized that COVID patients should try their best to warn any close contacts, as the health units cannot keep up with contacting all of the incoming cases and their contacts very quickly.

There were 81 active cases in Medina County as of this Tuesday, June 14, up from 72 this past Monday.  Less than a week ago, on July 8th, we had a total of 48 active cases.

A total of 258 Medina County residents have been stricken by COVID since it began, with 20 of those requiring hospitalization (that we know of—it’s not always reported to local authorities). Right now, 5 local residents are hospitalized.

As of Monday night, June 13, there were 408 “available staffed hospital beds” in Bexar County. That is roughly 10% of the total staffed hospital beds. Three hundred fifty-four ventilators were available.

About 11% of COVID patients have needed hospitalization in Bexar County, with about 35% needing ICU and 15% needing a ventilator according to Bexar County statistics taken over time.

As of Monday, Atascosa County had reported: 201 Active Cases out of 316 total cases.

Frio County reported 177 active cases out of 295 total cases. Thirty-eight percent was considered community spread. Twenty-seven active cases in 78061, four active cases in 78017, and one active in 78057.
