Abel Salazar

Abel Salazar, of Castroville, entered eternal rest on August 21, 2019 at the age of 69 years. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, and uncle, he was born June 30, 1950 in San Antonio, Texas to Matias Rangel Salazar and Aurora Santos Salazar, the oldest of two sons.
Abel graduated from Medina Valley High School in 1969 and attended San Antonio College for two years. He worked for Church’s Fried Chicken in San Antonio for forty-seven years before retiring as a manager in 2014. After his retirement, Abel volunteered his time and talents for the St. Louis Catholic Church Bereavement Committee. Abel loved fishing, hunting and recreational archery and he was quite proud of his impressive collection of Hot Wheels.
On March 31, 1973, Abel married Mary Jane Burell in the Sisters of Divine Providence Moye Chapel. They were blessed with forty-six years of marriage, three children and five grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Salazar of Castroville; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Allyssa Salazar of San Antonio; daughters and son-in-law, Marisela and SSGT Brandon Whiting (U.S. Army) of Fort Huachuca, Arizona and Mallorie Salazar of Austin; grandchildren, Gavin Whiting, Kael Salazar, Ellie Shank, Kyle Salazar and Xiomara Whiting; in-laws, Gerald Burell, Pearl Burell, Alma and Rick Yanez, Evelyn and Alex Mendoza, Tony and Melinda Burell, Eloise Burell and Mary Lou Fuentes.
Abel was preceded in death by his parents, Matias and Aurora Salazar; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tony and Oralia Burell and brothers-in-law, Joe Burell and Frank Fuentes.
Visitation will be Monday, August 26, 2019 starting at 6:00 pm at St. Louis Catholic Church, with the Mass of the Resurrection at 7:00 pm. The Holy Rosary will be recited Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at 10:00 am at St. Louis Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery in Castroville, Texas.
