5th Annual “Gift of Hope” fundraiser a success

Lanell Felps, Karlee’s great-grandmother, presented a check for $6,000 to the riser family, which was raised at the annual “Gift of Hope” fundraiser in Devine. Pictured are Glen Felps, Tori, Kennedy, Karlee, and Zach Riser, and Lanell Felps.

The Divine Savior Lutheran Church‘s 5th Annual “Gift of Hope” Fundraiser was held April 27th. Over 500 BBQ plates were served. Heavy’s Backyard BBQ cooked the brisket. A silent auction was held in the church’s fellowship hall. Randy Brown and his band played for three hours without a break.
Bryleigh Shullanberger, daughter of Kaprice and Corbin Shullanberger who suffers from a rare disorder called Metachromatic Luekodystrophy (MLD) was unable to attend due to her major health problems. MLD is a genetic disorder that affects the body’s nerves, muscle behavior, and internal organs. It slowly gets worse over time. Most children with this disease die before the age of 5.

Robert Cappella and Pastor Randall Wehmeyer present Zane Shullanberger with a check for $6,000. Shullanberger is the grandfather of Bryleigh Shullanberger, who was unable to attend due to her health.

Bryleigh’s grandfather, Zane Shullanberger informed us that Bryleigh is really having difficulty breathing. She is on oxygen full time and is unable to eat or swallow without tubes. She needs our prayers.
Karlee Riser was able to attend the event with her parents, Zach and Tori Riser. Karlee was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). SMA is terminal and degenerative disease that causes weakness and the wasting of the voluntary muscles in infants, children and adults. At this time it is not possible to cure SMA. These diseases have no cure.
The “Gift of Hope” was able to award $6000.00 to each family. This money is the first installment for the 2019 year. The “Gift of Hope” Golf Tournament benefiting Karlee and Bryleigh will be held Saturday June 22 at the Hondo Golf Course located in Hondo. In order for this event to be successful we need hole sponsors. Hole sponsorships are $100.00 apiece. Your family or company will be recognized. For more information about the tournament contact Jerry Busby at the 830-741-4653.
