Stanton Slaughter Smith

On September 28th, 2018, Stanton Slaughter Smith passed peacefully in his sleep in Lytle, Texas, at the age of 96.
He was proceeded in death by his first wife of 38 years, Theresa Auldine Hughes, who passed in 1985, his youngest son, Gary Wayne, his parents, Needham and Lenora Field, and his siblings, Ellena Lorraine (Jackie) Holmes, Francis Corder, and Needham Jr.
Known as “Stan” to friends and “Paw” to his grandchildren, he is survived by his second wife, Adeline (Addie) Minna Crenwelge Durst, his children, Theresa Leann Massey and Ronald Stanton (Tracee Lynn), his step-daughter, Doris Ann Disler (David Neil), and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Stan was born on March 30, 1922, in Derby, Texas. As a young man, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Core as they built Garner State Park, then later repaired aircraft in Panama. He asked to enlist shortly after Pearl Harbor, was called to the infantry, and fought to liberate the Philippines. After the military, as a veteran and experienced sheet metal worker, Stan was hired at Kelly Field to repair aircraft.
He married Theresa in 1946. After he retired in March of 1977, they built their dream home in Lytle, Texas, where he enjoyed his welding projects, fishing, raising cattle, riding around on his tractor, and hosting friends and family.
He was fortunate enough to find a second wife in Addie. They married in 1994, and shared 24 years of adventures together. He remained active most of his life, and generally enjoyed good health until the end.
Services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Castroville, Texas, on October 10th, 2018. Breakfast will be at 9:00 am, with the funeral to follow at 10:00 am.
