The Lady Pirate basketball team was on quite the roll prior to last Friday’s 49-29 defeat in Hondo. Lytle had won three consecutive games for the first time this season as they took down district foes Dilley, Poteet, and Cotulla in succession prior to the setback to the Lady Owls.
Lytle had an important road game in Crystal City last night, now finish league play with a home tilt against Natalia January 31 and a roadie against the Squaws in Jourdanton February 4.
The Lady Pirates were in 5th place in 28-3A going into this week, one spot out of the final spot for state playoffs.
vs Poteet
The Lady Pirates had revenge on their mind in their second round matchup against Poteet. Having lost a heartbreaker 31-26 to the Lady Aggies in Lytle way back on December 13, it was a great feeling for all of the players and…

The 8th grade middle school Colts picked up two victories in Devine last Thursday as the A squad won a tight one 31-29 over Pearsall while the B unit demolished the Dogies 40-18.
A special thanks to Carey and Korrey Paige for sending 8th grade stats!
8th A
The 8th grade A Colts played from behind for almost the entirety of last Thursday night’s contest on Sessions Court inside the DSAC. A back and forth contest early tilted Pearsall’s way on the scoreboard for a huge chunk of the game.
However, Devine led for good, though, when it mattered most, as the Colts took the lead with 8.1 seconds left in the game on a Jordan Beaver two-point shot to give Devine the final margin of 31 to 29.
Nata Valle led his team with 14 points and 5 steals while big-man Collier Paige pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with his 9 points.
Beaver finished with 6 points, but none bigger than the 2 he scored in the game’s waning moments.
Devine trailed throughout but never lost complete focus on the job at hand and that was to win the game.
Fellow big-man Zeke Simmons finally got the game…

In the sporting world, there’s nothing like having home field advantage. For the Arabian golf team competing in their first tournament of the 2025 season, playing at familiar Devine Golf Course surely gave them a little comfort in navigating the course and relieving some possible anxiety that may have been present on unfamiliar territory.
Devine shot 392 to defeat runner-up Pleasanton who posted 414. Hondo was on the Lady Eagles tail, finishing the day with 416.
Brianna Schaefer placed third individually as she broke 90 with a solid 89. There were 79 total competitors.
Gabby Morales was just out of medal-reach with a 92.
MacKenzie Ramirez (105), Lilly Lawless (106), and Brianna Balderama (113) rounded out the fivesome.

Warhorses splash Pleasanton;
#1 Ray’sean at the free throw line
Ray’sean Beaver’s long-range 3 forces OT!

Splash! Ray’sean Beaver hit a sideline hugging, nothing-but-net, 25-foot three-point shot from the left side of Sessions Court over two Eagle defenders with .9 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 52 and send it into overtime.
The Horses could not hold on to big leads built over the course of the first three quarters but were able to come through in the clutch to outscore Pleasanton 8-5 in the extra period to claim the exhausting 60-57 District 27-4A victory.
Devine’s big 41-23 lead toward the end of the third quarter quickly shrunk as Pleasanton clawed their way back from an 18-point deficit to take a 52-49 lead on a free throw with 16.7 seconds remaining.
The Horses inbounded under Pleasanton’s basket after the made free throw, advanced the ball up court, and exchanged a few passes before Cecilio De La Garza shuffled off the assist to Ray’sean’s game-tying shot.
With .9 on the clock and the Eagles setting up a play after their timeout, Pleasanton tried a baseball-type throw to the opposite end of the court that Mason Beaver intercepted like a defensive back would in football.
Mason was dragged to the court by a back-jumping Eagle offensive player that was initially called a foul on Pleasanton as the buzzer sounded.
For an unknown reason…
