Laura Alvina Brieden Marty Mangold

Laura Alvina Brieden Marty Mangold was born in her parents’ home along the banks of the Medina River in Castroville over 105 years ago on August 7, 1911. She passed away in Castroville on April 29, 2017. Laura was the last surviving of five children born to William and Alvina Pichot Brieden. Laura saw so many changes in the world during her life time and sadly also saw many family members pass away before her, including her beloved parents, husbands, sons, and a granddaughter.
Laura described her childhood as a happy one during an interview with Laurel Oppelt D’Orsogna for the Medina County History book. Laura shared many interesting stories and memories of her life with Laurel. She told Laurel that her family used a small boat for their daily trips into Castroville to school, church, stores, parties and dances. She said using the boat was easier and shorter than walking into town.
On July 14, 1936 she married Leonard Marty. After they married they moved to San Antonio. Laura and Leonard had two sons, Wayne and Darryl. During World War II, at the age of 37, Leonard was drafted and was shipped out, leaving Laura to care for their little boys. Laura said she never knew where he was stationed because it was classified information. Shortly after Leonard returned from the war, they returned to Castroville to live. In 1962, Leonard became ill and passed away in the Castroville Hospital on November 27, 1962.
Years later, Laura renewed her friendship with Hilmer Mangold, whose wife had passed away in 1960. After a courtship, they married on October 20, 1966 at St. Louis Catholic Church. Their marriage was a happy one. They enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and attending church and social functions. Sadly for Laura, Hilmer passed away on February 8, 1986.
Laura’s grandchildren recall that Laura “Granny” loved to cook, bake, crochet and play cards. She was a talented hand quilter, making everything from baby blankets to bedspreads. They also recall that Granny could read a book, watch TV, and listen to the radio, all at the same time!
Laura was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and the oldest living member of St. Ann’s Society, having been a member for 72 years.
