Jo Ann Tate Null

July 16, 1933 — May 27, 2024, Lytle, Texas

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our mom, Jo Ann Null, of Lytle, Tx. Mom was preceded in death by her parents, John Lester “Leck” Tate and Doris Blanke Tate, and her husband, Jimmy Null. She leaves behind many who loved her, including her daughters, Debra McCartney (husband Ron McCartney) and Dr. Cynthia Gans; and her sons Carl Null, Jay Null and Mark Null (wife Barbara Null).  She had 7 grandkids and 13 great grandkids. Her house was always full and loud. She also left behind who knows how many dogs, cats, chickens and various other animals. Mom and her family have roots to Lytle that go as far back as the 1800’s. Two members of mom’s family fought in the Battle of the Alamo.

Mom was a school nurse at Devine ISD for 30 years where she terrorized the students with their yearly vaccinations and various tests. She was involved in various clubs, including the Southern El Camino Real Committee, Lytle Women’s Club and a proud member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. When the new Lytle Elementary school was being built, she was a member of a self- proclaimed committee of one to save the heritage oaks in the schoolyard and went on a 3-day strike placing her car in front of the bulldozers at the school, until Lytle ISD promised they would not knock down any more of the trees. Those trees are still there today. We called her a “closet” tree hugger, which she hated. Additionally, Jo Ann was a member of the Texas Republican Women and served as a delegate to several State conventions and was a pole worker in Lytle for many years. Jo Ann attended and graduated from Lytle High School in 1951 and she was among one of the first classes who graduated from UTSA with a BA in Psychology. She was also a member of the Pecan Grove Country church.
She will be remembered by many for various reasons, but she will be remembered by her family as someone who loved margaritas with salt, drinking cheap wine and eating lots of jalapenos. We will miss her.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, you make a donation to the Lytle Public Library in memorial of Jo Ann Null. The address is P. O. Box 831, Lytle, TX 78052.
Graveside services were held on Monday, June 3, 2024, at 10:00 A.M. at the Lytle Community Cemetery in Lytle, Texas. Arrangements by Primrose Funeral Services.
