Devine ISD students in the middle school shop class and high school robotics have teamed to create elegant award trophies out of beautiful wood to be used for the Devine Education Foundation’s annual golf tournament scheduled for this weekend March 29, 2025 at the Devine Golf Course.
“They are doing very cool things and we are so proud of the students. The classes are recipients of past grants awarded by the DEF, so it’s a cool full circle of giving,” said Kirk Wagoner, Devine Education Foundation.
The middle school shop class made the plaques from raw wood and the robotics class laser engraved them with the Devine Education Foundation logo, and “Inspire, Empower, and Strengthen” and the words first place, second, third, and dead last.
Start to finish the shop students used various types of wood to create a beautiful masterpiece for each award trophy. The students cut the wood, assembled the strips, pressed and glued them together, trimmed the edges, sanded and varnished them which are just some of the steps involved in the shop classes.
The robotics classes designed and laser engraved, customized each one for the tournament winners.
All the while learning how to use the tools and processes under the direction of their teachers Jason Mohr and Jim Wilson.
Many of the materials and equipment that was used to create the trophies were purchased using money granted to the classes from the Devine Education Foundation over the years.
The DEF Golf Tournament this Saturday, March 19 has an 8:30 am check in and a 10:00 am Shotgun Start.
A drawing will take place at the end of the tournament. Tournament format is a 4 person team scramble.
