Two DHS teams qualify for State UIL XC Debate Meet in March
The teams of Emilie Dudley and Tristan Woods and Michael Meek and Gabriella Romano qualified for the State UIL Cross-Examination Debate Meet in March by winning 1st and 2nd place in the District Meet held Feb. 1 at DHS.
The State Meet will be held at The University of Texas at Austin March 13-18.
The DHS team of Lindsey Spannagel and Trinity Woods placed 4th at the District Meet and will be State Alternates.
“UIL debate competition motivates students and provides them with practical application for the skills they are developing,” said Jana Riggins, UIL State Debate Director. “This year’s debate topic prompted students to research and form their own thoughts and opinions on the real-world issue our government is challenged with in-order to provide national security while maintaining privacy for its citizens. Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its economic and/or diplomatic engagement with the People’s Republic of China.”
Through participation at the UIL Academic State Meet, students qualify for Texas Interscholastic League Foundation scholarships. Since its inception in 1959, the TILF has provided more than $29 million to more than 19,000 students. This year TILF expects to award an estimated 600 new and renewed grants, valued at more than $1.1 million. Grants and donations from foundations and individuals have funded these academic scholarships. One hundred percent of each dollar TILF receives goes directly for scholarships, with no administrative or other expenses being deducted.
