No one has made more sacrifices for our country than the men and women in our Armed Forces. Local soldier, Julian Gutierrez of Moore, stopped by the News office this week to share his good news, a pay it forward act of kindness.
He won a beautiful black 2024 GLB 2450 Mercedes Benz. Julian retired as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army after 23 years of service including two tours, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom and has struggled with his health ever since. This win, this gift, was more than just a material item for Julian; it was a breath of fresh air, love…

This week we want to recognize an outstanding young citizen, Tristan Cashion, a first grader in Devine who recently earned his spot on the Honor Roll at Ciavarra Elementary, despite facing some pretty big challenges. Recently, diagnosed with a brain tumor, Tristan underwent four surgeries within a matter of six days. Tristan is now back at school, and is undergoing an oral chemo treatment.
The Cashions are extremely grateful for the support they’ve received from this amazing community, and shared how Tristian’s 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Julia Hoog, and the school nurse Kellie Jopling are truly heroes in their eyes.
“Mrs. Jopling and Tristan’s teacher Mrs. Hoog both played a huge role in monitoring his symptoms and urging us to take him to the ER on December 4th. Mrs. Hoog was able to give us specific detail that ultimately led to them performing a CT in the ER and finding…

On March 10, from 8 a.m.- 3 p.m., family and friends of Kelly Hurst will be hosting a silent auction and rummage sale.
Donations for the silent auction and rummage sale can be dropped off at Top Notch Cleaners: 508 W. Hondo Ave. The family is also offering to pick up donations. All proceeds will go directly to the Hurst family for medical expenses. In 2023, Hurst was diagnosed with “chiari malformation,” which is a condition where the opening at the base of the skull is too small, and with high pressure, parts of the brain are pushed into the neck.
Before finding out of her diagnosis, Hurst had been misdiagnosed for three decades. As upsetting as this was, she remained hopeful.
Hurst has…
