Warhorse baseball racking up games as tournament season is here

The season may not have started the way Head Coach Heath Poppe and his Warhorse baseball players would have liked, but they have plenty of opportunities to get things going in the right direction as a slew of tournament games happen over the next couple of weeks.
vs Canyon Lake
After five scrimmages, the season opener came at Warhorse Field on February 16 against the visiting Canyon Lake Hawks. A disastrous six-inning cost Devine an opportunity to put the first actual tick of the season in the win column, but Poppe and his troops nonetheless got better from the experience of their 12-3 loss.

The Devine Arabians went 3-2 in their latest tournament in Jourdanton over the weekend. There were flashes of the two-time defending Area champs in this youthful squad. Finding their rhythm while learning to close games has been the biggest point of emphasis for this Arabians squad, head coach Micheal Sotelo mentioned how the team is still very much learning and growing with each game.
“The team is still trying to put the pieces to the puzzle as we are a young team this year,” Sotelo said.  “There are signs of well played softball and then there are some innings that are testing the ladies.”

HORSES WIN OVER EAGLES

Well, if ya know you know!
It did not take a sign language expert to know Devine’s playoff-seeding showdown against Pleasanton was going to be one of the bigger games in recent memory for Warhorse Nation.
Devine and Pleasanton had already played two classic matches during the District 27-4A season and had to play one more time to break a 1-1 tie with the winner getting the nod for the top Division II team in the state playoffs.
The Eagles topped Devine in the first matchup 60-58 on January 20 while the Horses returned the favor on Sessions Court 65-63 on February 13, a night that crowd tensions and finger-waving was taken to the next level.
Oh, really? No, oh Riley!

Warhorses grind out wins over Pleasanton, Carrizo Springs

Devine picked up two monster wins over District 27-4A foes Pleasanton and Carrizo Springs over the last week to boost momentum and confidence as the postseason begins next week at a time and place to be determined as of press time on February 17.
vs Pleasanton
To the dismay of many Eagles fans…one in particular (if ya know, you know)…Devine withstood a fourth quarter rally by Pleasanton to get the win 65-63 on Sessions Court on February 13.
Mason Beaver and Christian Beaver tied for game-high scoring honors with 20 points each while Mason led the way in rebounding with 10. Christian had 9.
Karson Ray had 9 points and had four humongous blocked shots throughout the game.
Devine dominated the game throughout, but it definitely got hairy the last 90 seconds of the game after the Horses built what looked like a more than comfortable 10-point lead at 61-51. However, Pleasanton sank four consecutive free throws after a couple of Devine technical fouls to pull within 6 points. In a blink of an eye, Pleasanton added another two-point shot after getting the ball at halfcourt to make it uncomfortable at 61-57 with 1:22 to go.
Being pressured all the way up court, Mason made a full court layup to put Devine up 63-57 at the 1:16 mark. Consecutive Eagle layups closed the gap to 63-61 with 37: to go. Ray’sean hit a free throw to make it 64-63 with :27 on the clock then hit another free throw with :12 to go to give Devine a big four-point advantage at 65-63m essentially making Pleasanton’s last two free throws a nonfactor.
Warhorse Nation definitely showed out for senior night as the stands were full and the atmosphere was electric from the opening tip.
Devine led early 13-10 and was also up 31-21 at the break. The Horses held on to that 10-point lead going into the fourth quarter as they were ahead 44-34.
Devine had as much as a 15-point lead but if District 27 4A action has taught us anything it is that no lead is safe.
Pleasanton’s 29-21 fourth quarter scoring run was not enough to erase the full deficit, allowing Devine to leave their home court for the final time in 2026 with a win.

Arabians take on Cuero for Bi-District

Press deadlines preceded the ending of the Arabians February 17 Bi-District battle versus Cuero (9-27) at Seguin High School. Devine (16-13) made the state playoffs after finishing third place in District 27 4A with a 7-5 record.
Devine played the Lady Gobblers earlier this season, and if that result could be duplicated Head Coach Hannah Thompson would gladly take it. The Arabians trounced Cuero 45-26 back on December 6, 2025, at the Navarro Tournament.

The Varsity Arabians completed their first tournament of the young season, traveling to San Antonio to take on Burbank, Harlandale, Jefferson, Lanier, La Vernia and Del Rio. Devine is now 2-2-1 on the season as they look to reclaim their bi-district title from last season

There is still a lot to play for as the Warhorse basketball team wraps up District 27-4A action on Friday, February 13. Devine sat in 2nd place prior to the games played on Tuesday, February 10 and they could theoretically finish anywhere from first to fourth in the league standings going into the state playoffs.
Games played on February 10 included Devine at Carrizo Springs, Somerset at Uvalde, and Floresville at Pearsall, while top seed Pleasanton had the night off.
Pleasanton, Devine, Floresville, and Somerset will make the postseason as Carrizo Springs, Uvalde, and Pearsall are already eliminated from contention.
Devine’s final district game is on Friday, February 13…and it is a huge game as they host the Eagles looking to tie the season series at 1-1. Pleasanton escaped with a narrow 60-58 come from behind win in round one as the Horses potential game-winning three pointer rimmed out.
Although last night’s games likely switched up some spots, the final playoff positionings boil down to Tuesday night (February 17) as Pleasanton hosts Somerset and Floresville travels to Uvalde.
In short, Devine…LOGIN TO CONTINUE READING at www.devinenewsmembers.com. You will get instant access to our full E-edition, and begin getting the newspaper delivered to your home next week for $36 a year in Medina County. Support important local city, county, and school news like this!
