Jerel Beaty Staff Writer Denise Conteras was a huge part of the tremendous successes achieved by the Arabian basketball team in 2023-2024. Devine posted a 30-8 overall record which included a perfect 12-0 District 29-4A district-championship campaign. Texas Association of Basketball Coaches recognized Contreras’ contributions and promptly tabbed her for the Class 4A-Region IV All-Region Team.
Lizbeth De Los Santos, Denise Contreras, and Liah Romero
Jerel Beaty Staff Writer Not only did seniors Liah Romero, Denise Contreras, and Lizbeth De Los Santos make the grade on the court for the 30-8 Arabian basketball team this past season, but they also made the grade where it really counts which is their classrooms at Devine High School.
Warhorse #1 Luke Friesenhahn fields 3rd out for the Warhorses to hold Wildcats 1-1 in the 5th inning.
Jerel Beaty Staff Writer District 29-4A has not been a bed of roses thus far for Head Coach Heath Poppe and his Warhorse baseball team as they dropped their first two league games prior to their March 19 tilt against Pleasanton. Devine lost back-to-back leads against Uvalde at home and versus Carrizo Springs at Wildcat Field to drop to 0-2. Against the Coyotes Devine led 3-2 going into the top of the 7th before the roof fell in and Uvalde escaped with the 7-3 victory. In Carrizo Springs, the Horses were up by the slimmest of margins at 2-1 going into the bottom of the 6th inning before the Wildcats tied it at 2 apiece. Devine and Carrizo Springs worked extra innings, with each team getting a….

Horses compete at Regionals
Jerel Beaty Staff Writer Israel Reyes has one more competition to go in 2024 and it is his biggest and most important one yet as he qualified for the State Powerlifting Meet in Abilene at Taylor Country Arena. Reyes placed 4th overall in the 181lb division. Seth De Leon and Joe Guerrero also qualified for the Regional Meet at JK Northway in Edinberg but were not able to successfully extend their season. Reyes lifted a total weight of 1,450 pounds that included 600lb in the squat rack, 325lb on bench, and 525lb deadlifting. Congratulations to all three Warhorses and best of luck to Israel in Abilene!
Karter Brown placed second in discus with a 105’6 throw at Saturday’s meet. Ismael Torres placed seconnd in pole vault.

Jerel Beaty Staff Writer Well, that did not take long. Team standings 1st Devine 142, 2nd Cornerstone 111, 3rd Antonian 95, 4th Marble Falls Faith Academy 56, 5th Great Hearts Northern Oaks 46, 6th O’Connor 46, 7th Bulverde Gloria Deo 37, 8th Bracken Christian 30, 9th Austin Regents 28, 10th Round Rock Christian 27, 11th St. Mary’s Hall 15, 12th San Antonio Christian 13, 13th TMI 2…
Jerel Beaty Staff Writer Thankfully, it was not 230 miles from Devine High School to Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas but only 229.9 as 10 Arabians made the 3½-hour trip on Monday to compete in Class 4A Region IV Powerlifting event Tuesday, February 27 that gave each a chance to qualify for State in Frisco in mid-March. Alanna Frausto, Vivianna Torres, Savannah Parker,…
Jerel Beaty Staff Writer Like all high school sports, seasons break down into their own little compartments. First, there are tryouts and early practices without a complete compliment of players due to other sports. Secondly, there are multiple scrimmages for coaches to try an assortment of lineups and positions for several players. Thirdly, and what the Devine Warhorse team is currently experiencing, is tournament season that proceeds regular non-conference games that in turn lead into district and, hopefully, postseason state playoffs. Head Coach Heath Poppe and his players made the short trip to Somerset to take part and improve parts of their game this past weekend at the Bulldog classic. Devine collected wins in their two…
Jerel Beaty Staff Writer The undefeated 12-0 District 29-4A Champion, Bi-District Champion, and Area Champion Arabians took one of the chin last Tuesday at Southwest Legacy High School as West Oso proved to be a little too big and a smidge too athletic for Devine to keep up with as the Lady Bears won 68-33 to end the hometown team’s gaudy 30-9, 2023-2024 season. A “key to victory” for Head Coach Jim Sessions stated prior to this tilt was to keep West Oso from dominating the rebounding department and to try to limit their athleticism, but both seemed fruitless as Devine was outrebounded 44-24 and was shut out in transition points 18-0. West Oso won the battle down low as they owned the points in the paint 44-18 and recorded 4 blocked shots to Devine’s two swats. The Lady Bears also got 11 second-….
