Lady Pirates hoops run ends in Regional Quarterfinals to Columbus

“Lifetime of Memories!”

Jerel Beaty
Staff Writer
There is the saying that All good things must come to an end but that may be just a little bit of an understatement as the Lady Pirate season came to a close last week in the Regional Quarterfinals. The saying should go, All great things must come to an end.
As Head Coach Lori Wilson stated, “What a year and what a season these 8 girls, or, as I refer to as The FAB 8, have had representing LHS and their community. They were your 4-Peat District Champs, Bi-District Champs, and Area Champs for 2024 and collected three more gold balls for the trophy case!”
Columbus got the better of the Lady Pirates 73-53 in Seguin, but do not let the 20-point difference fool ya. Lytle gave the Cardinals all they wanted and more.
“Our last game of this incredible season will…

Warhorse baseball tackling tourney season

Like all high school sports, seasons break down into their own little compartments. First, there are tryouts and early practices without a complete compliment of players due to other sports. Secondly, there are multiple scrimmages for coaches to try an assortment of lineups and positions for several players. Thirdly, and what the Devine Warhorse team is currently experiencing, is tournament season that proceeds regular non-conference games that in turn lead into district and, hopefully, postseason state playoffs.
Head Coach Heath Poppe and his players made the short trip to Somerset to take part and improve parts of their game this past weekend at the Bulldog classic. Devine collected wins in their two…

Regional Quarterfinalists Arabians bow out of State Playoffs to West Oso

Undefeated District Champs gave their all

Jerel Beaty
Staff Writer
The undefeated 12-0 District 29-4A Champion, Bi-District Champion, and Area Champion Arabians took one of the chin last Tuesday at Southwest Legacy High School as West Oso proved to be a little too big and a smidge too athletic for Devine to keep up with as the Lady Bears won 68-33 to end the hometown team’s gaudy 30-9, 2023-2024 season.
A “key to victory” for Head Coach Jim Sessions stated prior to this tilt was to keep West Oso from dominating the rebounding department and to try to limit their athleticism, but both seemed fruitless as Devine was outrebounded 44-24 and was shut out in transition points 18-0.
West Oso won the battle down low as they owned the points in the paint 44-18 and recorded 4 blocked shots to Devine’s two swats. The Lady Bears also got 11 second-….

The dreadful thing about Tuesday night basketball playoff games is The Devine News must submit to press early Tuesday evening which is prior to tipoff of all Tuesday night ballgames, no matter the sport or event.
Arabian Nation fans have to wait to hear the complete story regarding Devine’s February 19 Regional Quarterfinal state playoff game result versus the Lady Bears of West Oso until next Wednesday. Sigh.
Head Coach Jim Sessions stated before tipoff that a key to a quarterfinal championship was for his team “to limit the Lady Bears athleticism and aggressiveness in hopes of keeping West Oso off the boards.”
Grandiose thing here is even if things did not turn out the Arabians way in this one, they already hit the extraordinary 30-win mark against the Cherokees and will finish the season at some point with only 9 losses.
Simply incredible!…

The last qualifying meet lady lifters for the 2024 season was February 14 in Natalia as over 160 competitors took their final shot to continue their season.
While many females around the area were opening sweet, endearing Valentine’s Day cards and quite possibly shedding a happy, heartfelt teardrop or two while at the same time smacking on some caramels and chocolate as their significant other realized how much he just paid for a box of mixed deliciousness, Arabian powerlifters were grunting and groaning, dripping in sweat as hopes danced in their hearts…

Michael Jackson’s Thriller hit the charts February 26, 1983, almost 40 years ago to the date Lytle’s most recent “thriller” of a ballgame hit the charts…or bottom of the net, for that matter…as Calyssa Sevier literally snapped the net with a three-pointer with her Lady Pirates down one and under 16-seconds on the clock that gave them the Area Championship over Edna 66-65.
“OMG!” exclaimed Head Coach Lori Wilson afterwards. “If you were not in Seguin last Friday night you missed a thriller!”
Edna gave all they had, but Lytle had more in their tank late in the game and they..

Bi-District Champs?Pirate basketball eyes state playoffs

#5 Zach Perez battles going up for the layup.

*Lytle played Karnes City on Press Night February 20

Jerel Beaty

Lytle qualified for the UIL State Playoffs long, long ago but did not get the joys of playing for a gold ball in Bi-District until last night, February 20 as the District 28-3A runner-up Pirates took on the third-place team from District 27-3A Karnes City in Seguin.
The Pirates finished the season strong, finishing with an overall record of 25-7 that included big-time wins over rival Natalia and over Cotulla.
To get to win #30 means a date in San Antonio after the Regional Tournament which in turn signifies outstanding playoff successes as well.
The Badgers placed third in their district at 4-4 as Poth (7-1) won the…
