Coming out of Thanksgiving break, the Lady Mustangs’ record is 3-8 with a packed schedule ahead of them. Starting on Thursday Dec. 4, the Natalia Classic tournament will begin and the Lady Mustangs will play five games over a three day span. Head coach Steven Spangler said this is a good opportunity for the squad to try new things, stating that “sometimes you just have to play games to see how things are working.”
“They have to be able to adjust on the fly when something isn’t working and push ahead when it is,” Spangler said. “I’m hoping that we can use this tournament to figure out what’s going to work for us scoring wise.”
Spangler said the Lady Mustangs have had some scoring.
“Our defense is doing pretty well, but we have to match that on the offensive side of the ball,” Spangler said. “We have to improve in that area if we want to be competitive in district.”

The Natalia boys varsity team are back from Thanksgiving break and ready to get back on the court. The Mustangs’(1-2) next matchup will be against McCullen County(6-1) and head coach Justin Welsh is relishing the challenge of taking on a tough team that is well-coached and has a rich history.
“We want to come out focused, compete on every possession and use this game to prepare us for district play,” Welsh said.

The Horses continued their winning ways during the Thanksgiving break as they held on for a thrilling 67-63 win over Laredo Marin then cruised to a 66-35 win over the Indians in Jourdanton.
vs Laredo Martin
Fresh off their win impressive win against Marion, the JV Warhorses faced “a strong Laredo Martin squad in what proved to be a true test” according to Coach Zac Valenzuela.
“No lead felt safe in this one, even after we built a 14-point advantage in the third quarter,” he stated.

Warhorse Head Basketball Coach Jacob Alegria is wasting little time getting his players game action as they have now played 8 ballgames in about two weeks after yesterday’s contest against Laredo Martin and hit the road to Jourdanton this Saturday after their tryptophan has hopefully worn off from their Thanksgiving turkey.
“We have been racking up the miles and points,” Alegria said about his 4-3 squad as of this past Monday. “After opening the season with a tough loss to the #11 ranked Wimberley Texans, we reeled off three straight wins to get some momentum going.”
Devine defeated the San Antonio Highland Owls 70-60 behind the strong scoring of Mason Beaver who knocked down 32 points. Karson Ray was next with 16.
Ray’sean Beaver dealt 10 assists while Tanner Davis was hauling down 15 rebounds against the Owls.

With football playoffs still going on around the area and other basketball teams just getting rolling, Warhorse JV basketball coach Zac Valenzuela shook some things up in order to keep his tournament flowing flawlessly and getting all of his players ample time to prove their game-worthiness on the court.
“With multiple teams backing out of the Devine JV Tournament, we found ourselves needing to adjust on the fly,” Valenzuela stated matter of factly. “The solution was simple. Split our roster in half and create two squads, Devine 1 and Devine 2. Instead of dividing the teams myself, I selected two captains and allowed the players to ‘draft’ their groups in a classic snake-draft format.”
Group one was dubbed “The Mckey’s” due to their captain being Jacob McKee. McKee and his band of players including Jack Bandel, Shawn Lowe, Martin Rios, Jack Rumfield, and Sergion DeLeon
Devine 1 dropped both of their matchups according to Valenzuela, as he stated, “We fell just short in a tight 56 to 57 loss to Pleasanton, then battled through a 52 to 61 defeat to a resilient Dilley squad.”
Valenzuela points out that it is still very early in the season.

The Varsity Lytle Lady Pirates basketball team has been making strides with each game played. In their game against Fall City, the Pirates fought their way back into the mix, even out-scoring Beavers in the second quarter, but ultimately fell 26-37.
Wilson said they struggled shooting from the field, but what hurt Lytle the most was free throws, the Lady Pirates were 8/20 from the line.

Pirates Basketball battle Buffaloes in close game

The Lytle Varsity Pirates have started their season 1-2, all three games have been super competitive and head coach Arturo Vela highlighted how the boys have been competing no matter who was on the floor.
Lytle’s first two games of the season were road games, to start your season on enemy territory is an uphill battle but Vela said their mindset was to “stay together and be tough.”
“The mindset was to stay together and be tough,” Vela said. “Road games force you to be disciplined, and these early experiences will help us later when district road games get tight.”
In their loss to Lanier, Vela said the pressure applied by the Volks eventually got to the Pirates, disrupting their spacing and execution, and even preventing them from getting any touches in the paint.

Varsity Mustangs basketball has officially began with Natalia sitting at an overall record of 1-2. They won their first game of the season against Stockdale 47-40, but dropped their next two against Navarro and Sabinal. Head coach Justin Welsh said the key difference between their wins and losses has been putting together complete games. Meaning Welsh wants the squad to bring the same effort throughout all four quarters of basketball.
“Against Navarro, we played a great first half taking a two point lead into halftime, but in the second half…LOGIN TO CONTINUE READING at www.devinenewsmembers.com.
