Corrie Edward Mays returned home to the loving arms of our heavenly father on March 13, 2024, at the age of 87. Corrie is preceded in death by his wife, Ida (Waneck) Mays, his mother and father, and his son Brian. He is survived by his daughters, Debbie (Allen) Sansom of Devine, Diane (Abel) Valdez of San Antonio, and Denise Mays of Natalia, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Everyone’s original Warhorse and Arabian 2024 Track Schedule has Sinton on Wednesday, April 10 as the site and date of this year’s Area Track Meet. However, a recent change has the meet moved to Port Lavaca Calhoun on Thursday, April 11.

Many of the Warhorses faced stiff competition in last week’s meet in Floresville as they managed 76 points to place middle of the pack in District 29-4A. Pearsall won the team title followed by Pleasanton as the runner-up.
Donovan Dixon was the sole gold medal winning Warhorse as he took top honors in the 400m Dash. Dixon also earned a bronze medal in the 800m Run.

Chavez thrilled to lead Natalia PD
Chief Martin Chavez loves what he does, and applied for this postition as soon as he saw it come available.

After reviewing many applicants, the City of Natalia is excited to announce a new chief of police, Martin Chavez.
Chavez’s interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement sparked at an early age.
“When I was in elementary, I was a school safety patrol,” Chavez said. “I’ve always been a public servant since I was a kid — I like helping people.”
Chavez grew up in San Antonio, after his family moved to Texas from Riverside, California.

Temporary home needed for local family
The Garza family who lost their home to a fire in the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 3, is still in need of a temporary shelter such as a camper trailer or RV to call home.
They will forever be grateful for the outpouring of clothing and donations the community has given, and are now looking for a place to start over.
Their home which was located on family land on FM 2200 near Devine has been deemed a total loss, along with all of their possessions.

ARABIAN TRACK DISTRICT 29-4A CHAMPIONS!
Kourtni Geyer broke the Devine High School record, with her 10’ 4” pole vault. The record was previously held by Brianna Bowyer who hit 10’3” in 2021.
Kylie Monreal smoked ‘em in the 300M hurdles with a time of 45.30, setting a new DHS record as well. That record was previously held by Dakota Dougherty in 2008 with 45.49.

It was short and sweet, at least to those of us that did not have to run outside or workout at our favorite (or least favorite) field event every day after school for the past four months or so, but the Junior Varsity Arabian and Warhorse 2024 track season concluded Wednesday, April 3-4 in Floresville at the District 29-4A Meet.
While varsity-level track and field members advance to Area with a top four finish, the JV season slowly fades into a memory for all those that represented Devine High School proudly and to the best of their ability.

The Mustangs scored 68 points to place fifth overall in last week’s District 28-3A Meet in Natalia. They edged 6th place Crystal City by three points as the Javelinas finished with 65 points.
