Question: What does the Bible say about God being merciful?
According to the Bible God is very merciful to every person who loves Him and believes in Him.
The Bible says in Psalm 103:17 “But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children.” God is a very merciful God. This is one of His many wonderful attributes. To fully appreciate God’s mercy towards us, we need to understand what mercy is. God being merciful is Him not giving to us what we deserve for being sinners. Just like if a man steals one hundred dollars and he comes and appears before a judge in a courtroom. The judge after looking at his past and current circumstances may decide to let the thief pay back the money, he may let him do community service or he may send him to jail. If he chooses either of the lesser punishments, then the judge showed mercy to the thief. In a much greater way, God has shown mercy to us even though we were condemned as a sinner before Him. God is perfect and can have nothing to do with sin (Habakkuk 1:13) so this created a problem between people and God. He made us for fellowship, but when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden that fellowship was severed. Ever since then people have had a free choice to either accept God or reject Him. He wants everyone to accept Him but He doesn’t force anyone to. Joshua 24:15. Someone may have lived immorally and sinfully all their life but if they call upon the Lord Jesus to save them even if they’re on their death bed, He will. Romans 10:13. This is God showing us great mercy, for He has all power and authority to sentence us to death, but instead He gives us the option to choose life and heaven with Him. Deuteronomy 30:19. He so often withholds the judgment that we deserve because He’s a merciful God. Thank God He is.
