The 8th Grade Colts A and B teams took wins in their first official action of the season as the A-Team won 12-6 while the B-Team took the 18-0 shutout.
A-Team
According to Coach Michael Sotelo, “The A-team game was to be a ‘David versus Goliath’ match-up as Jourdanton was a team that went undefeated last year as seventh graders.” It was an entertaining game, for sure as it was a nip-and-tuck affair all evening. The Colts found themselves down but definitely not out trailing 6-0, before slaying the Indians with their impressive comeback.
“We were able to get a touchdown from Nate Valle thanks in part to some great blocking by Noah Garcia, Brody Poppe, Troy Guerra, Joe Balderrama, and Jayden Rodriguez that tied the game at six.”
A low-scoring tilt and needing a stop and a score would give the Colts a win and a chance to pursue their own undefeated season.
“Our defense stood strong and did not let Jourdanton into the endzone the rest of the night!” Sotelo gave credit to the whole defense and stated, “a great effort by Nate Valle, Chase Teetsel, Logan Alexander, David Espinosa, Kash Esparza, and Jack Wallace along with a pivotal interception by Jordan Beaver” gave the Colts a chance to pull out the victory. Moses Contreras scored the decisive touchdown in the Colts season-opening 12-6 victory.
B-Team- The B-team game was not as nail-biting as the A-team’s, but it was filled with plenty of excitement as they pulled out the 18-0 win.
Sotelo gave a shoutout to defensive standouts “Tommy Camarillo, Lucas Marquez, Johnny Martinez, Zachary Settles, Cameron Nighswander, and Julien Guillen.”
To score three touchdowns in their first time on a game field meant the offense had to be doing something right as well. “Offensively we dominated with great blocking by Abram Rodriguez, Ray Hernandez, Bentlee Copeland, Aiden Montgomery, and Patrick Rosas and got some hard running by Aaron Frazier, Jacob Cruz, Kaleb Pompa-Gonzales, and Tommy Camarillo.”
