Devine senior linebacker Trystan LaFond is set to participate in the 48th Annual San Antonio Sports All-Star Game, which will take place this Saturday, January 10 inside the Alamodome, Sponsored by Valero, the event begins at 5:30pm and will air locally on CW SA.
LaFond bounced back in a big way from an early-season injury to help lead the Warhorses to their 24th consecutive playoff appearance as a program.
Former Head Coach Paul Gomez expressed admiration for LaFond’s growth and his well-earned recognition. Gomez noted LaFond’s commitment during the summer to increasing his explosiveness and speed, along with his dedication to film study that refined his technique at linebacker. This hard work became evident as LaFond made a seamless transition from defensive lineman to linebacker, adapting quickly to his new role.
Gomez emphasized that no player invested more effort into learning a new defensive position than LaFond. His game sense stood out, and in the opening three games before his injury, he accumulated tackles at a rate that could have set new records in the area, ranking among the leaders.
The prestige of the upcoming All-Star Game is highlighted by the fact that the 2024 edition featured 67 athletes who advanced to collegiate football. There will be 119 players on the field and sidelines once kickoff takes place.
LaFond will play for Team Blue, coached by Johnson High’s TP Miller, while Team White will be led by Southwest High’s Alex Franco.
The entire coaching staff is extremely proud of LaFond for representing both the program and the community, and there is strong confidence that Warhorse Nation will show enthusiastic support when he takes the field this Saturday inside the friendly confines of the Alamodome.

A superbly played first half was unfortunately followed by what turned out to be a disastrous third quarter for Devine in their 27-4A opener in Pleasanton on December 19. Devine Head Coach Jacob Alegria and his Warhorse basketball team has faced the best competition possible in preparation for their equally-challenging District 27-4A gauntlet that tips off January 2 at Somerset.
This past week, even though a “W” did not register in the win column, Devine got better for their stretch run by continuing their pattern of playing fast, physical teams that only make them better overall.

There were some fantastically entertaining ball games played by the Warhorse basketball team last week. Between their Tuesday 81-65 romp in Poth and their championship game worthy performances in their home tournament that saw the Warhorses go 3-2 and falling to San Antonio Holmes 42-20, Devine is on the right track to challenge for the District 27-4A title as that chase begins soon.
Devine averaged 72 points a game through the first four games of the tourney, winning three of those. The sole loss over the first four games was to San Antonio Holmes, a team they faced once again in the championship match on Saturday.
A defensive battle broke out in that one, with Devine falling just short 42-40.
Several players stood out for different reasons at different times of the tournament, but the All-Tourney nods went to Karson Ray and to Cecilio De La Garza.
vs Poth
Mason Beaver’s 37 point outing along with Tanner Davis getting his normal double-digit Poth on December 9 by the final score of 81-65.
Mason connected on 13 of 24 shot attempts (54%) including 6 of 11 (55%) from downtown. Karson Ray knocked down 19 points as part of his 10-rebound double-double, Davis snatched 10 boards of his own, and Ray’sean dealt a game-high 11 assists. Christian Beaver added his own double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds while also assisting on 6 other Warhorse conversions.
Devine jumped on Poth early, building a 21-12 lead after one. The Pirates had a little fool’s gold in the second quarter as they closed the deficit to only two points at the break.
The Horses slowly…LOGIN TO CONTINUE READING at www.devinenewsmembers.com. You will get instant access to our full E-edition, and begin getting the newspaper delivered to your home next week for $36 a year in Medina County. Support important local city, county, and school news like this!

It was quite the productive trip to Cypress Chrisitan High School for the Warhorse basketball program as they finished runner-up, losing in the championship game to Kincaid after winning four of their first five ball games.
Mason Beaver and Karson Ray were selected to the All-Tournament team, leading Devine to an impressive 4-2 mark. That four wins in six games was not the only mark left, as the Horses proved they are worthy to take on all types of different competition as district season begins to creep up.
