Defense shines as Devine opens 2-0 in District 14-4A DII

Jerel Beaty
Staff Writer
Devine lived up to its motto “Whatever it Takes!” as they defeated the visiting Carrizo Springs Wildcats 21-6 last Friday at Warhorse Stadium.  The homecoming-crowd saw plenty of good defense from the home squad as the Wildcats were stymied by the Devine “D” for a large chunk of the evening.
The Warhorses are 2-0 in District 14-4A with a huge showdown with the 1-0 Bulldogs in Bandera Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7pm.
Much of the credit for this victory goes to the defensive side of the ball. From Warhorse defensive tackle Corey Dirck stripping a Wildcat running back of the football on Carrizo Springs first play from scrimmage that linebacker Matthew Gomez recovered on Devine’s five-yard line all the way to the final buzzer, the Devine “D” was outstanding.

A chance to tie for the District 29-4A Championship will be on the line for the Devine Arabian volleyball team October 24 in the DSAC. Devine defeated Pleasanton October 10 before having an open date October 13. If all went as planned against the Lady Bulldogs from Somerset last night and if the Arabians can take care of business against Pearsall October 20, the last game of district becomes one of the biggest magnitudes with a championship and the number one seed going into the playoffs on the line.
