Costly seat belt decision pending from Devine school board in March

A decision on how best to comply with state requirements that all school buses be equipped with three-point seat belts restraints for every passenger by 2029 is expected in March from the Devine ISD school board.
The cost of retrofitting the existing fleet of 23 buses not already in compliance is estimated at $447,000, said Kandy Stein, school district director of facilities, at the board’s Feb. 16 meeting.
“Basically, Senate Bill 546 is amending the transportation code requiring three-point seat belts in any school bus no matter the age and applies to all school districts in the state,” she said.
