Wayne Erron Van Winkle

Wayne Erron Van Winkle, of San Antonio, passed away on October 6, 2017 in San Antonio at the age of 84 years. He was born January 22, 1933 in San Antonio, one of four children born to Lloyd Erron Van Winkle and Mary Ruth Brooks Van Winkle.
Wayne graduated from Lytle High School and attended college for two years before joining the Air Force. He served his country for five years, and had the distinction of being the first person to program drones. He then worked as a computer programmer for IBM for over twenty years before his retirement. Wayne was the first customer engineer for IBM that did not have a college degree.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Howard Van Winkle.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law: Dr. Lloyd P. Van Winkle and Dr. Mary Nguyen, Howard and Juana Van Winkle, daughter and son-in-law, Laura Van Winkle and Jason Hahs, all of San Antonio; grandchildren, Andrew (Tana Brown) Van Winkle, Jacob (Erin) Van Winkle, Nathan Van Winkle, Benjamin (Jessica) Van Winkle, Jessie (Nicole) Van Winkle, April (A.J.) Frye, David (Carla) Van Winkle, Christina Van Winkle, Sarah (Ray) Cosby, Matthew Van Winkle, Taylor Hahs, and Jonathan Van Winkle; 13 great-grandchildren and “one on the way”; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Ann Van Winkle of Rockport, sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Gary Berg of Hye, sister-in-law, Ann “Chummy” Van Winkle of Lytle; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be Thursday, October 12, 2017 starting at 9:00 am, followed by the Funeral Service at 10:00 am at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Castroville Community Cemetery.
