Warhorse track athletes spend week in Houston

A handful of Warhorse track athletes competed in the 67th annual TSU Relays in Houston this past weekend. Guido Zapata competed in the 110m and 300m hurdles along with the 4x100m relay. Luke Torres ran the open 400 and anchored the 4x100m relay. Xsavior Martinez competed in the open 200m and was second leg on the 4x100m relay. Juan Sic started the 4x100m relay for the Warhorses.
Zapata ran a 41.23 in the 300m hurdles to finish 18th of 54 competitors. In the 110m, he ran a 15.09 in the prelims to earn a spot in the finals where he finished 7th overall with a 15.9.
“Having the opportunity to go compete against some of the best track athletes in East Texas was a great experience that will definitely help us as we get closer to competing in District, Area and Regionals,” stated Zapata.“I want to extend a huge thank you to Coach Vay and Coach Cozby for making the trip possible.”
Luke Torres ran a 51.6 in the open 400m, finishing 41st out of 104. Xsavior Martinez ran a time of 23.46 in the open 200mto finish 59th of 125 runners. The 4x100m relay team ran a 44.5.
“The individuals that make up the relay team got the experience of running against a nationally ranked Desoto team,” stated Coach Khera Vay. “Although our relay team finished 29th out of 50 teams, the meet was a great experience for the young boys, mimicking a similar experience to what regionals will be. The competition was great with state and nationally ranked teams and athletes and the boys competed well! We are proud of them.”
