The Devine Warhorse golf team held on for a second place finish at Regional played at Gabe Lozano Golf Course in Corpus Christi last Tuesday afternoon. After completing day one in first place with a seven-stroke lead over second place Fredericksburg, the team had to fight to keep the State possibility alive after a furious rally by Fredericksburg, El Campo, and Columbus. The team looks to improve on last year’s 12th place finish also played at Apple Rock Golf Course at Horseshoe Bay in Marble Falls.
“We may have gotten a little ahead of ourselves after the first day of the tournament,” stated Head Coach PJ Wells. “Fredericksburg shot much better the second day while we struggled in some spots. Although winning Regional was our goal for the weekend, we still accomplished the bigger goal of getting back to Apple Rock.”
“I am excited for the chance to go back to state,” stated junior Brandon Flues. “I went as an alternate as a sophomore so getting to actually play this year is going to be a great experience.”
The returning players off last year’s team are preparing to work up in the individual standings as well. Last season at Apple Rock, Carson Tilley finished 27th with a two-day score of 166 while fellow returnees Noah Tumbarello (190) and Brice Champion (193) also look to improve off last years’ experience.
