Warhorse golf closes season at State between Apple Rock and a hard place

Warhorse golfers Beau Cardenas, Hunter Murphy, Carson Tilley, Brice Champion, and Noah Tumbarello competed in the State golf tournament last week.

Carson Tilley, Hunter Murphy, Noah Tumbarello, Beau Cardenas, and Brice Champion accomplished a feat that no Warhorse golf team has achieved in the past 23 years. Not since the 1994 squad coached by Bruce King with Brandon Rackley, Trent Rankin, George Fernandez, Robert Parker, and Robert Campsey did a Devine squad qualify to compete at the state level. That team, like this 2017 team, won district and finished as Runner Up at Regional. The 1993 team of Doug McCormick, Roger Clark, Jimmy Oliveras, Rackley, and Rankin finished 3rd in State overall after winning both District and Regional. That team was coached by Richard Malone.
The ’17 version of Warhorse golf did not fare as well as the ’93 bunch but still have a ton to be proud of. After narrowly missing the state tournament in 2016, this team put in a lot of practice time both on the course and at the driving range in Castroville. The individual scores weren’t what each had worked and hoped for, but it doesn’t diminish the fact that they are now a part of Warhorse Golf History.
