Sylvan Charles Stein

Our beloved Sylvan Charles Stein, passed away on February15, 2017 in San Antonio at the age of 90 years. Sylvan was born in the family home in Rio Medina on August 17, 1926. He was third of eight children born to Alfred Joseph Stein and Elvie Bertha Haby Stein. In 1943 Sylvan graduated from St. Louis High School. His education continued at Draughon’s Business College and he graduated from there in 1944. Sylvan was inducted into the Army at the end of World War II. He returned home and began farming. He took great pride in tending the family farm. Sylvan was also an insurance agent and was partner in Stein Insurance Agency with his brother Glennis. He retired from the insurance agency in 1995 so he could spend more time with his family. Sylvan was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, Quihi Gun Club, Texas Pecan Growers Association and was a past president of Catholic Life Insurance Union Branch 17, past president of St. Louis Society, and a past commander of Weiss-Wurzbach American Legion Post 460.
On May 22, 1951 he married Marilyn Elizabeth Jungman at St. Louis Catholic Church. Together they raised five children and welcomed their children’s spouses and 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren into the family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Elvie Stein; brothers Harvey Stein and Allen Stein and his wife Janie; daughter-in-law, Cindy Becker Stein; brothers-in-law, William Terry Tschirhart, Thomas Jungman and his wife Barbara and sister-in-law, Elvira Jungman.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of over 65 years, Marilyn Jungman Stein of Rio Medina; his loving children and their spouses, Ann and Jerry Amen of San Antonio, David and Beverly Stein of Castroville, Larry and Barbara Stein of Castroville, Mark and Mary Jo Stein of Argyle, Linda and Ken Riek of Leander; grandchildren, Wade Amen, Melanie Amen, Tyler (Jessica) Stein, Travis (Shelbie Zotyka) Stein, Troy (Andi) Stein, Allison (Vinny) Oliver, Brandon Stein, Adam Stein, Michael Stein, Will Stein, Margaret Stein, Trevor Riek, Trent Riek, Kraig Riek, and Kevin Riek; great-grandchildren, Kanin Stein and Kinsley Stein; siblings, Eilleen (Lester) Koerlin, Harold (Patricia) Stein, Alfred Joseph (Arline) Stein, Jr., Alfrene Tschirhart, and Glennis Stein; sister-in-law, Gladys Stein; brother-in-law, Donald Jungman; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation was Sunday, February 19, 2017 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm with the Holy Rosary recited at 5:00 pm at St. Louis Catholic Church. Mass of the Resurrection was Monday, February 20, 2017 at 10:00 am at St. Louis Catholic Church. Interment followed at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery with military honors.
Memorials may be made in Sylvan’s memory to St. Louis Catholic School, Sisters of Divine Providence or to the charity of your choice.
