Shirley Tschirhart Oefinger passed away on December 23, 2017 at her home in Quihi, at the age of 87 years. She was born September 9, 1930 in Castroville, one of four children born to Alex Herman Tschirhart and Marguerite Florence Ahr Tschirhart. Shirley graduated from Lytle High School.
On November 8, 1949, she married Edson Jay Oefinger in St. Louis Catholic Church. Shirley and Edson were blessed with five children and over fifty-seven years of marriage at the time of Edson’s death on August 27, 2007.
In addition to caring for her family and home, she also worked on the family farm and ranch. Shirley was a lifelong member of St. Louis Catholic Church and a member of St. Ann’s Altar Society for over fifty years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edson Jay Oefinger; father, Alex H. Tschirhart; mother, Marguerite Ahr Tschirhart Riff; grandson, Jonathan Reyes; in-laws, Hilmer Bendele, Mary Lee and Fred Jungman and her baby sister, Lois Marie Tschirhart.
Survivors include her children, Dianne (Kent) Keeton of Castroville, Steven Jay (Denise) Oefinger of Quihi, Clyde (Dale) Oefinger of South Jordan, Utah, Lorraine Oefinger (Roger) Lopez of Castroville and Chris (Lauren) Oefinger of Quihi; grandchildren, Brian Zimmerman, Jennifer (Bruce) Munson, Erik Jay (Michele) Oefinger, Terence (Charity) Oefinger, Andie Oefinger (Greg) DeHart, Chad (Amy) Zimmerman, Kurt (Christine) Oefinger, Tara Reyes (fiancé Johnnie Morales), Charles Reyes (fiancée Jessica Lopez), Jordan Oefinger, Aaron Oefinger and Carson Jay Oefinger; great-grandchildren, Cole Zimmerman, Austin Zimmerman, Jessica Jacobs, Tyler Jacobs, Beckham Oefinger, Easton Oefinger, Scarlet Oefinger, Joaquin Oefinger, Logan Oefinger, Kirsten Vu, Holden Oefinger, Levi DeHart, Reagan DeHart, Cheyenne DeHart, Luke Zimmerman, Ellie Zimmerman, Brooklyn Tapia; sister Melrose Bendele of San Antonio; brother, Alex J. (Marian) Tschirhart of Castroville; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation was Wednesday, December 27, 2017 from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home, with the Holy Rosary recited at 7:00 pm that evening at St. Louis Catholic Church. Mass of the Resurrection was Thursday, December 28, 2017 at 10:00 am at St. Louis Catholic Church. Interment followed at Hondo Cemetery.
