Local Veterans Day ceremonies on tap Nov. 8-12

A number of different ceremonies in honor of Veterans Day are taking place in Devine and Natalia over the next few days.

DISD 4th grade Veterans Day concert Nov. 8
The fourth graders at Devine Intermediate have been hard at work planning a concert to honor our veterans. The fourth grade Veterans Day concert will be held this Thursday, November 8 at the Devine Intermediate gym at 6:00 pm. The fourth graders would like to invite all veterans in our community to attend.

Ciavarra Elementary Veterans Day program Nov. 9
Ciavarra Elementary School would like to invite all active military personnel and veterans to its Veterans Day Program Friday, Nov. 9, 2018 at 9:30 am in the elementary/intermediate school gym.
Everyone is invited to come take part in this program. Parents/guardians of elementary children received an invitation in the child’s folder.
“This is our opportunity to honor our military and our country,” Mrs. Brenda Gardner, principal, said. “We want our children to know that these men and women are very special and serve our country in a very special way.”
Students will march from the elementary school to the gym. Parents are invited to join their child’s class for the parade.
“We will sing, have students perform, and recognize our men and women who have served or are serving our country,” Gardner said.
All veterans, military personnel, and their guests will be treated to lunch at our Veterans Day Cookout.
“We would like to thank Brown Chevrolet for making this possible for our service men and women,” Gardner said.
All those planning to attend are asked to sign in at either the elementary or intermediate school office by 9:15 a.m. All visitors to the campus are required to have a valid photo ID.

Veterans Day ceremony at Shooting Star Museum Nov. 11
Sunday, November 11, 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. The Shooting Star Museum is celebrating this historic day with an 11:00 am ceremony to recreate the Armistices of November 11, 1918. The Pearsall AFJROTC and the Alamo Muzzle Loading Club are participating in this event. Guest speaker SSGT John Aken of Castroville will speak on the history of the aftermath of the “Great War.” The ceremony starts with cannon fire and then the bugle call of “Cease fire” just prior to 11:00 am (this was the time established by the signing of the Armistice).
During the day visitors can enjoythe Library displays ofWWI memorabilia as well as talks on the history of the American Flag that flew in France during WWI and on Armistice Day. The AFJROTC will demonstrate the proper way to fold the Flag and the meaning of each fold. All veterans are encouraged to visit and sign a pendant to record their military service.
The Museum will open at 9:00 a.m. for this event and guest are invited to view this special exhibit as well as the permanent collection of vintage aircraft, cars, and farm equipment and gasoline stationary engines. Food and drink are available for a donation. The Museum is located 6 miles south of Castroville at 5445 C.R. 5710. Call 210-380-6083 for driving directions.

Veterans Day ceremony in Natalia Nov. 12
The Annual Veterans Day Ceremony in Natalia will be held on Monday, Nov. 12 at 11:00 am in front of the Veterans Memorial Monument. This year’s keynote speaker is Natalia native Sgt. 1st Class Pedro Sanchez, Jr.
Two new names will be added to the monument this year during the ceremony. Everyone is invited and welcomed to attend.
