JV Warhorses beat Pearsall, fall to Holy Cross

The JV Warhorses went 1-1 on Saturday, March 11, beating Pearsall 12-5 before losing 7-2 to Holy Cross.

Devine used a 2nd-inning surge to wrest the lead and the eventual win from Pearsall after an early 3-0 deficit.
Brady Cardenas drew a one-out walk, and Truett Barron followed with a single before being replaced on the base paths by pinch runner Blaine Miller. Brady Harrell tripled to right field to drive both in. Gehrig Runyan and Tristin Cruz hit back-to-back singles, and Chad Lawson drew a two-out walk. Leonard Pompa followed with a single, Isaiah Oropeza walked, and Cardenas doubled to give Devine a 7-3 lead.
Four more runs followed in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Harrell led off the inning with a double to center field, and scored on Runyan’s single to shortstop. Cruz and Joey Seguin hit back-to-back singles, and though Cruz was tagged out on the base paths, Runyan scored. After Seguin was caught stealing for the second out, Lawson singled and scored on Pompa’s double to center. Oropeza then knocked in Pompa with a hard single to left to put Devine up 11-3.
The JV Warhorses’ last run of the game came in the bottom of the 4th inning, leading 11-4. Harrell started the inning with a single, Miller doubled, and Seguin’s hard-hit single to second drove in Harrell for a 12-4 lead.
Pearsall scored once in the top of the 5th inning to make the final score 12-5.
Devine had 16 hits to Pearsall’s nine. Both teams stranded six runners.

Holy Cross
Earlier in the day, Devine’s offense was stifled against Holy Cross, scoring just two runs in a 7-2 loss.
Both runs came in the bottom of the 1st inning, after Holy Cross already led 3-0. Seguin led off the inning with a single to second before being picked off at first. Lawson walked, Oropeza doubled to center, and Harrell walked to load the bases. Barron hit a line drive double to left field to drive in Lawson and Oropeza for Devine’s only runs of the game.
Holy Cross went on to add runs in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th innings.
Both teams had six hits, but Holy Cross drew seven walks to just two for the JV Warhorses. Devine committed one error.
