Gilbert Buentello was the first person from Devine High School to win a State UIL Literary competition, taking 1st in AA Boys Declamation in 1958. He was coached by Lucille K. Day.
In 1965, Jim Shaw finished in 1st place in AA Boys Persuasive Speaking, and Barbara Milam won AA Girls Shorthand.
