Devine tennis brings home 4 trophies

The Devine Varsity Tennis Team brought home four trophies, with others earning their way to the semi-final matches in several brackets. This was a very competitive tournament which included several 6A & 5A schools. It was a double elimination tournament, so players had to keep winning in order to return to the court. “Our team keeps improving from week to week. It was a very competitive tournament with very nice weather!”
Girls Singles:
Freshman, Brooke Runyan won the Girls Singles Championship. Brooke beat Shawrieh of Taft HS and Rios of East Central HS. Brooke’s semi-final match was a very tough one with many games going to deuce. She won the 1st set 6-3, but Schaal of Vadergrift HS came back stronger in the 2nd set and they ended up playing a tie breaker. After a long battle, Brooke won the tie-breaker 7-4, to win the match. Then Brooke beat Nishinura of Vandergrift HS in the Championship match to earn a 1st place trophy.
Senior, Lindsey Spannagel beat Alqahtani of Lytle in straight sets. Lindsey played very well, but fell to a very skilled Nishimura of Vandergrift HS. Nishinura ended up winning 2nd place.
Girls Doubles:
Scarlett Smith/Lydia Zapata played well earning a spot in the semi-finals match. They beat Orozco/Ortiz of Lytle, and Trevino/Lugo of SW Legacy, before falling to a tough Vandergrift team in the semi-finals match (1-6, 3-6). This team ended up winning 1st place.
Chloe Serafin/Malvin Flores also played hard earning their way to the semi-finals match. They beat Landeros/Short of Lytle, and Frederickson/Gonzales of MacArthur HS, San Antonio. They lost their semi-finals match to Troyer/Attwood of Vandergrift HS (4-6, 0-6).
Boys Singles:
Warhorse Ralph Rios won the Consolation Title. He lost a very tough first match against an experienced senior, Berry of MacArthur HS. In the consolation bracket he beat Crowley HS 8-2 and Southwest HS 8-1. Then he beat his own teammate Jake Harrell in a very close battle (9-7) for the Consolation Trophy.
Jake Harrell also had a very tough first match against a MacArthur senior, Herrera. Jake lost this match, but then beat Crowley HS 8-2, Southwest HS 8-1. Jake then played and lost to Rios of Devine in the Consolation title match.
Boys Doubles:
Mason Zenon/Caeden Alvarez beat Crowley HS, (6-2, 6-3) then lost to a very tough Southwest HS team.
Freshmen, Jacob Barron/DJ Dzierzanowski played well, but took two hard losses against more experienced teams from Southwest HS and MacArthur HS.
Mixed Doubles:
Toby Ramos/Preslee Quisenberry won 2nd place. They beat East Central, Crowley, and MacArthur HS all in straight sets earning them a spot in the championship match against Briones/Tamayo of Southwest HS. This match proved to be too tough for Devine, as they lost giving them 2nd place.
Freshmen, Laurel Spannagel/Denton Zuercher played very well, earning their way into the semi-finals as well. They had a bye, then beat Taft, before losing to Briones/Tamayo of Southwest HS in semi-finals.
