Flowers and greenery at the home of Martha and George Wall were the backdrop for the Current Events Club’s annual Devine High School Senior Ice Cream Social. The students enjoyed ice cream floats and plentiful cookies. Horseshoes, washers, Ladder-ball, DHS senior Word Searches, and Guess the Senior Baby Picture were games the seniors could choose as they ate and socialized.
Martha Wall welcomed the senior students; senior sponsors; school board member, Nancy Pepper; DHS principal, Derrick Byrd; Bill Herring, mayor; and other guests. Martha reminisced about the social as it was when she and other Devine High School alumni present graduated. The social, which originated in the 1950s, was an afternoon tea for girls only. In the early 1980s boys were included and the event made much less formal.
High school principal, Mr. Byrd, introduced each senior telling of each student’s high school accomplishments and goals.
During the social, ten student’s names were drawn to receive a $10 gift certificate to a local restaurant or to Walmart.
Keepsake plastic cups and monogrammed napkins were favors for the seniors.
